Lucha Underground Recap: Aztec Warfare III

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground features the highly anticipated third installment of Aztec Warfare. Aztec Warfare is the brain child of Dario Cueto, and if the first two are to go by, this is sure to be awesome. 20 competitors in the Temple are in the match, starting with two and adding a new member every 90 seconds. The only way to be eliminated from the match is by pinfall or submission, and the winner is the Lucha Underground Champion.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto runs into the Gift of the Gods Champion, Johnny Mundo, on his way to getting his brother Matanza. If Mundo does not win Aztec Warfare and become Lucha Underground Champion at the same time he is the Gift of the Gods Champion, he is cashing in his current title for a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity next week. Since Mundo is so confident, Dario Cueto changed his entrant number from #12 to #2.

Aztec Warfare III
We know three confirmed spots for this match: Matanza Cueto and Johnny Mundo at numbers 1 and 2, respectively, as well as Drago at #20. Matanza Cueto debuted as Aztec Warfare II, where he entered at a surprising #12.

Entrant #3 is the man who “won” Dario’s Dial of Doom a few weeks ago, Son of Havoc. He is followed by Jeremiah Crane, who just debuted last week where he won the opportunity to be in this match. Number 5 just makes this match even better, with the entrance of Pentagon Dark.

Still with nobody eliminated, Johnny Mundo finds an ally with entrant #6, and fellow member of the Worldwide Underground, PJ Black. Mariposa follows Black to the match, and immediately gets hit by a double underhook piledriver by Jeremiah Crane. Crane can’t celebrate for long, however. Matanza enters the ring and eliminates both Crane and Mariposa. Eliminated: Jeremiah Crane & Mariposa

After the elminations, two lucha libre legends join Aztec Warfare: Rey Mysterio and Dr. Wagner Jr. (accompanied by Famous B and Brenda). Still with only two eliminations in the match, Marty “The Moth” Martinez and the third Worldwide Underground member, Jack Evans, enter the fray. Evans, Black, and Mundo use the numbers game to their advantage to eliminate the man from the open road. Eliminated: Son of Havoc

The elimination is immediately followed by the entrance of a rival to the Worldwide Underground, Sexy Star. Also entering is Ricky Mandel, who hasn’t been seen in quite some time. Unfortunately for him, Pentagon Dark catches wind of him and goes to break his arm. Before he can do so, Black Lotus appears in the Temple for the first time this season with her crew. One of her allies hits the Canadian Destroyer on Pentagon, and both he and Ricky Mandel are eliminated. This is immediately succeeded by the entrance and elmination of Mascarita Sagrada. Eliminated: Pentagon Dark, Ricky Mandel, & Mascarita Sagrada

Number 15 is Famous B, who tries to make Rey Mysterio one of his clients, but instead he eats a 619 and gets eliminated. Mysterio then manages to roll-up Marty “The Moth” Martinez. Eliminated: Famous B & Marty “The Moth” Martinez

The following three entrants are The Mack, Joey Ryan, and Mil Muertes. When Muertes enters the ring, both he and Matanza Cueto eliminated opponents at the same time. Eliminated: Joey Ryan & Dr. Wagner Jr.

Entrant #19 is Kobra Moon, which means that there are no longer any unknown entrants in the match (since Drago is #20). This means that all that is left is a ton of eliminations.

The Mack proceeds to hit both PJ Black and Jack Evans with stunners, leaving Johnny Mundo by himself for the rest of the match. Eliminated: PJ Black & Jack Evans

Drago takes out Kobra Moon with the Dragon’s Lair pinfall, and Matanza hits the last entrant with the Wrath of the Gods. Eliminated: Kobra Moon & Drago

Everyone in the match hits their finishers on Matanza Cueto, ending with Rey Mysterio hitting him with two 619s and a sunset flip driver to eliminated the monster, and give him his first loss ever. This guarantees a new Lucha Underground Champion. Eliminated: Matanza Cueto

Matanza hit Wrath of the Gods on Rey Mysterio out of frustration, and Johnny Mundo slips in the ring to get the pinfall. The attack from Matanza possibly cause a back injury for the King of Lucha Libre. Eliminated: Rey Mysterio

After being out of action for months, Angelico returns to leap from the top of Dario Cueto’s office onto the entire Worldwide Underground. Sexy Star then covers Johnny Mundo for the elimination. Immediately after, Mil Muertes eliminates the Mack with the flatliner. This only leaves two: Mil Muertes and Sexy Star. Eliminated: Johnny Mundo & The Mack

Sexy Star sends Mil Muertes through a table from the second turnbuckle, then finishes him off with a double stomp. Sexy Star wins Aztec Warfare III, and becomes the first-ever female Lucha Underground Champion. Winner, and NEW Lucha Underground Champion: Sexy Star
