Lucha Underground Recap: Mundo Steals the Gold

Photo from El Rey Network

On the last episode of Lucha Underground, the impossible happened. In the third edition of Aztec Warfare, Matanza Cueto defended the Lucha Underground Championship, entering at #1 because of his brother Dario Cueto’s arrogance. Matanza would be outnumbered, and would eventually be eliminated by the King of Lucha, Rey Mysterio. That might have been the most shocking moment of the match, if it was not for how it ended. The final two participants were Mil Muertes (the man who just put Prince Puma in a coffin indefinitely) and Sexy Star (the woman who just lost the Gift of the Gods Championship to Johnny Mundo. Sexy Star would to the seemingly impossible, and pin the Man of 1,000 Deaths to become the first-ever female Lucha Underground Champion.

Tonight, Sexy Star has her first Lucha Underground Championship title defense, when Johnny Mundo cashes in his Gift of the Gods Championship.

Aerostar, Drago, & Fenix (c) vs. The Rabbit Tribe – Lucha Underground Trios Championships
Tonight is the first time that we are seeing the Rabbit Tribe in the Temple, after weeks of mysterious vignettes. Unsurprisingly, this gives off an Alice in Wonderland vibe, since Paul London, the leader of the group, has said that he has followed the white rabbit to become who he is. They have quite the generous debut, being given a Trios Championship opportunity against some of the best luchadores that the Temple has seen. It helps that Paul London is one of the best WWE Tag Team Champions of all-time, along with the former WWE Cruiserweight Champion, Brian Kendrick.

The Rabbit Tribe focuses on mind games and deceiving the Trios Champions, but it doesn’t work. Fenix is able to slip a pinfall throughout all of the disorientation and retain the titles. Winners, and STILL Lucha Underground Trios Champions: Aerostar, Drago, & Fenix

Backstage Segment
The Mack finds Sexy Star backstage and congratulates her on her victory last week. Since the Worldwide Underground is known for some shady tactics, he says that he is going to be at ringside for the match. Sexy Star refuses, and pridefully says that she must do this on her own.

Dante Fox vs. Killshot
Killshot’s experience in the military seemed to have traumatized him, and he turned to lucha libre and has hidden his identity. Several weeks ago, Dante Fox appeared out of nowhere and attacked Killshot, who apparently “left him for dead” (Fox’s words to Matt Striker). Now, Fox is out to get some revenge on Killshot.

After, frankly, way too many finishing moves, Dante Fox puts Killshot away with a modified Michinoku Driver for the victory. Winner: Dante Fox

Backstage Segment
Dario Cueto goes into his office only to find out that Black Lotus is already there. Lotus returned last week along with the Black Lotus Triad to take out Pentagon Dark. The Triad wants to punish Pentagon Dark even further, so El Jefe comes up with an idea. Pentagon will take on the Black Lotus Triad in a gauntlet match, but with a twist (which isn’t surprising considering who just made the match). The twist is that no matter who gets each fall, Pentagon Dark will have to face all three members of the Triad.

Sexy Star (c) vs. Johnny Mundo – Lucha Underground Championship
Since Johnny Mundo is cashing in his Gift of the Gods Championship tonight, the belt will be vacated and the hunt for the Aztec Medallions will begin again. Johnny Mundo defeated Sexy Star just a couple weeks ago, so he is going into this match very confident.

During the match, Johnny Mundo takes a crutch from a fan, but isn’t able to use it on the champion. Sexy Star goes to the fan to see if he/she is okay, and the fan hits Sexy Star with brass knuckles. Johnny Mundo takes advantage, dragging Sexy Star into the ring to hit the End of the World and give Sexy Star a very short title reign. After the match, it turns out that the “fan” who hit Sexy Star was the returning Taya. Winner, and NEW Lucha Underground Champion: Johnny Mundo
