Lucha Underground Recap: Battle of the Bulls

Photo from El Rey Network

Last week on Lucha Underground, we saw the debut of the Black Lotus Triad. All four members of the triad, followed by Black Lotus herself, competed in consecutive matches against Pentagon Dark. After Pentagon broke Black Lotus’ arm several months ago at Ultima Lucha Dos, the Triad returned the favor by breaking both of his arms.

Opening Segment
Angelico, who recently returned to the Temple during Aztec Warfare III, comes into Dario Cueto’s office demanding a match against Johnny Mundo, but Mundo has a restraining order against him. After threatening Dario Cueto, El Jefe decides to put him in a new tournament, titled “The Battle of the Bulls.”

Four fatal-four way matches will take place, and the winners of those matches will compete in one final fatal four-way match to determine who will face the Lucha Underground Champion, Johnny Mundo, next.

Cage vs. Texano vs. Joey Ryan vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. (w/Famous B & Brenda) – Battle of the Bulls Qualifying Match
This fatal four-way match includes three of the biggest, most powerful men in Lucha Underground. There’s also Joey Ryan. Dr. Wagner Jr. is a lucha libre legend, so he is a favorite going into this match. Cage and Texano are in a Best of Five Series with each other, so they know each other well enough to almost cancel each other out. Joey Ryan, the odd man out, could possibly be overlooked enough to steal a victory.

Texano hits Joey Ryan with a Last Ride sit-out powerbomb, but Cage storms the ring and hits Texano with his own rope. After laying out, Cage takes advantage of the powerbomb and pins Joey Ryan to steal the first round victory. Winner: Cage

Backstage Segment
Taya helped Johnny Mundo screw Sexy Star out of the Lucha Underground Championship, so Dario Cueto gives her a unique opportunity. Later tonight, Sexy Star will face PJ Black, who is the only member of the Worldwide Underground that she hasn’t faced. If she wins, she can bypass the Battle of the Bulls tournament and be guaranteed a Lucha Underground Championship rematch against Johnny Mundo inside a steel cage. If she loses to PJ Black, however, she will never be able to challenge for the Lucha Underground Championship again.

We switch gears to the detective agency that is trying to take down Dario Cueto. Cortez Castro doesn’t know how he can go back to the Temple since his cover is blown, but his boss has an idea. When his broken arm heals, he go back to the Temple and compete under a mask.

Sexy Star vs. PJ Black
While Dario Cueto may have prevented interference in Sexy Star’s potential Lucha Underground Championship rematch by putting it in a steel cage, there is no guarantee that the Worldwide Underground can’t screw her in this match as well.

Jack Evans inevitably tries to interfere to assist PJ Black, but it backfires when Black accidentally superkicks Evans. Sexy star takes advantage of the confusion to roll up Black for the win, giving her another shot at the Lucha Underground Championship. Winner: Sexy Star

Backstage Segment
Kobra Moon is sitting in a throne, telling her serpent-like servants to bring “the man who was once a dragon” (Drago) back to her.

Dario Cueto is seen approaching Matanza Cueto, who is locked up in his usual cell. Matanza doesn’t want to be in the Battle of the Bulls tournament, and instead he wants revenge on Rey Mysterio for giving him his first loss ever at Aztec Warfare III. Matanza slams Dario into the cage, and manages to get the key from him.

Marty “The Moth” Martinez vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Mil Muertes vs. The Mack – Battle of the Bulls Qualifying Match
With Cage being the only luchador confirmed for the Battle of the Bulls finale, whoever wins here has quite the challenge against him already. However, these four competitors are some of the top guys in the Temple, so it’s anybody’s match.

During the match, Matanza Cueto interferes and beats down El Dragon Azteca Jr. before being summoned back by Dario Cueto. The Mack takes advantage and hits Marty “The Moth” Martinez with a rebound stunner to pick up the victory and get one step closer to a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity. Winner: The Mack
