Lucha Underground S2E3 Recap: Kobra Strikes

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, we saw three great matches, which included the debut of a new luchador to the temple. With the help of a low blow, Johnny Mundo defeated Killshot in each luchador’s first match in Season 2. “The Darewolf,” PJ Black (formerly known as Justin Gabriel in WWE) would have his debut match against The Mack, in which Black would come up short and take a loss. To main event the evening, Prince Puma and Pentagon Jr. somehow worked together to defeat the Disciples of Death in a 3-on-2 handicap match.

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground features the debut of a new luchador, Kobra Moon. We do not know much about Kobra Moon, other than that she has described herself as sexy, venomous, and deadly. Her match tonight will put her bold claims to the test.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Bengala vs. Kobra Moon
This match is the debut of Kobra Moon, and we know nothing about her so far. Bengala has been impressive in his few matches so far in Lucha Underground, which has included him winning one of the seven Aztec medallions that eventually made up the Gift of the Gods Championship.

Bengala goes to the top rope to attempt a moonsault, but Kobra Moon puts her knees up to counter. After the counter, Kobra Moon locks in a Snake Sleeper to put Bengala away, and win her debut match in Lucha Underground. Winner (via submission): Kobra Moon

Video Package
There is a short video showing an Aztec tribe from a thousand years ago. They talk about the gods, and mention that they won’t return for a thousand years (how convenient). What is interesting about this video is that apparently Aerostar time-traveled to present day for when the gods arrive.

Backstage Segment
Catrina approaches King Cuerno backstage, disappointed in his performance two weeks ago against Fenix. King Cuerno won the Gift of the Gods Championship from Fenix, but he did not destroy Fenix like Catrina wanted. In order to get what she wants, Catrina sets up a match for tonight. King Cuerno will face Fenix in a non-title Last Luchador Standing match.

Jack Evans vs. Drago
Jack Evans and Drago are two of the best luchadores in Lucha Underground, and both are having their first Season 2 match here tonight. At Ultima Lucha, where we last saw both of these men, Jack Evans fell short in a seven-way Gift of the Gods Championship match. Drago was more successful at Ultima Lucha, defeating Hernandez in a Believer’s Backlash match. Whoever wins tonight will have a great start to the second season.

Drago goes for the Dragon’s Lair pinning combination, but Jack Evans counters into a backslide. Evans flips over for the bridging pin, puts his feet on the ropes for leverage, and picks up the not-so-clean victory. Winner: Jack Evans

After the match, Jack Evans gets on the announcer’s table to announce the winner, Jack, “The Dragon Slayer,” Evans.

Fenix vs. King Cuerno – Last Luchador Standing
King Cuerno is very effective at being a hunter, picking apart his prey until he moves on to someone else. Fenix, however, does not give up in any circumstance, seen in the Grave Consequence match and the deathmatch against Mil Muertes.

For those who don’t know, in order to win the Last Luchador Standing match, your opponent has to stay off of their feet for the count of ten. The count restarts once the downed competitor gets hit by their opponent.

Fenix pushes King Cuerno, ladder in hand, through a table to put him away for the ten count. Winner (via count-out): Fenix

After the match, we see Cortez Castro in a detective’s office regarding the whereabouts of Dario Cueto. During his conversation with the detective, Joey Ryan (of indie wrestler fame) joins the two. Castro and Ryan will work together in the Temple, with their priority being to find Dario Cueto.
