Lucha Underground S2E5 Recap: Machine vs. Pipe

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, we saw three first-ever matches. The former Lucha Underground Trios Champions, Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, and Angélico successfully took on Chavo Guerrero and The Crew (without Bael, which has been the case since the middle of Season One). For the third week in a row, we saw a new luchador have a match in the Temple, when undercover cop Joey Ryan lost in his debut match against Cage. To main event the evening, former Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma faced Pentagon Jr., and just by the skin of his teeth (almost literally), Prince Puma got the pinfall on Pentagon Jr.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Matt Striker announces that tonight, Johnny Mundo will take on Cage in the main event. The last time they met, Cage defeated Mundo. Vampiro announces that along with that, there will be three other huge matches.

Jack Evans vs. PJ Black
Before Jack Evans is even announced, he takes the microphone to announce himself into the match, and yet again calls himself the “Dragon Slayer,” further pushing his feud with Drago.

Two weeks ago, “The Darewolf,” PJ Black (formerly Justin Gabriel in WWE), made his debut in the Temple, where he had an impressive showing against The Mack. Unfortunately, however, PJ Black would lose his debut match. “The Darewolf” needs a win in this match before he gets lost in the shuffle of all of the luchadores.

During the match, Drago appears on the perch to distract Jack Evans. Drago goes down to the ring to spit mist in the face of Jack Evans, but Evans moved out of the way, leading to Drago accidentally hitting PJ Black with the mist. Jack evans takes advantage, rolling up PJ Black with a backslide modified with a bridge to put “The Darewolf” away. So far, PJ Black is 0-2 in the Temple, which is not a good start for the new luchador. Winner: Jack Evans

King Cuerno vs. Killshot
On the Season 2 premiere episode, King Cuerno defeated Fenix for the Gift of the Gods Championship, and has yet to defend the title since becoming the champion. Cuerno faced the former champion in a Last Luchador Standing match, and Fenix was able to put Cuerno away. Killshot has not seen much success in the Temple so far in his career. Debuting in the Trios Championship Tournament, Killshot has done an incredible job during his matches, but he has not been able to put his opponents away.

Killshot looks to do a little extra damage on Cuerno before putting him away, but he took too much time, leading to King Cuerno hitting the Thrill of the Hunt on Killshot for the pinfall victory. Winner: King Cuerno

After the match, King Cuerno continues to attack, when Fenix comes down to the ring to save Killshot from being hit by a package tombstone piledriver.

Texano vs. Chavo Guerrero & The Crew – Gauntlet Match
The way a Gauntlet-style match works is in favor of Chavo Guerrero and The Crew. Texano has to face one member of the group, and if Texano scores a fall, he moves on to the next luchador. If at any time, Texano gets pinned or submitted, he loses the match.

Mr. Cisco starts the match, and gets eliminated very quickly after Texano hits a superkick. Eliminated: Mr. Cisco

Cortez Castro, who is an undercover cop along with Joey Ryan, enters the match next. Texano hits a sit-out powerbomb on Castro to put the second member of The Crew away. Eliminated: Cortez Castro

Chavo Guerrero attacks Texano from behind to enter the match, and this is now a traditional one-on-one match. Cortex Castro uses Texano’s bull rope to hold down Texano’s feet out of the referee’s vision, and Chavo Guerrero scores the pinfall. Winners: Chavo Guerrero & The Crew

Backstage Segment
Pentagon Jr. approaches Catrina demanding a match against Prince Puma. After they briefly fight, Catrina gives him the match against Prince Puma next week. Before Catrina leaves, she warns Pentagon Jr. that putting his hands on her was the biggest mistake he has ever made.

Johnny Mundo vs. Cage
Throughout the last few weeks, Johnny Mundo and Cage have been attacking each other at every opportunity. This is a mix of hatred between these two, as well as both of these luchadores making a statement towards the Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes.

Cage hits Weapon X on Johnny Mundo, but a woman we have not seen before, new Lucha Underground signee Taya, slides a lead pip into the ring and distracts the referee. While the referee is distracted, Johnny Mundo hits Cage across the skull with the pipe for the victory. Winner: Johnny Mundo

Backstage Segment
King Cuerno is tired of being the hunted, and instead becomes the hunter. King Cuerno wants to cash in his Gift of the Gods Championship against Mil Muertes next week, but instead, Catrina says that King Cuerno will be defending his championship against Fenix in a ladder match.
