Lucha Underground S2E12 Recap: Aztec Medallions Return

Photo from El Rey Network

On the last episode of Lucha Underground, we saw the kickoff of the second Trios Championship tournament, as well as a Lucha Underground Championship defense, which seems to happen every week nowadays.

To start off the show, the recently debuted Kobra Moon, who has been very impressive so far, face one third of the Trios Champions, Ivelisse. Ivellise came out on top, which is nice to see considering that for most of Ivelisse’s time in the Temple she was suffering from a leg injury.

In the first match of the Trios tournament, we saw the team of Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro (who is an undercover cop along with Ryan), and Mr. Cisco defeat the unlikely team of Marty “The Moth” Martinez, Mariposa, and the Mack. To main event the evening, “The Monster” Matanza Cueto would easily defend his Lucha Underground Championship yet again after he soundly defeated Fenix.

Tonight will feature another match in the Trios Championship tournament, with the star-studded team of newcomer Dragon Azteca Jr., Rey Mysterio, and former Lucha Underground Champion, Prince Puma.

Opening Segment
Cage, Taya, and Johnny Mundo are in Dario Cueto’s office regarding the Trios tournament. Dario Cueto like having the least likely teams in the tournament, and he wants this year’s tournament to be better than the last. With that in mind, Mundo, Taya, and Cage are entered into the tournament as one of those unique teams.

Argenis vs. Killshot
It has been quite a while since we have seen Argenis. He made a brief appearance at Aztec Warfare II, but he has not had a singles run in the Temple in months. This is Killshot’s first match since his series with King Cuerno, and he has a different min set going into this match. Killshot comes out with camouflage gear and dog tags, which are probably reminiscent of his brothers. In a video package last week, we learned that Killshot spent time in the military as a sniper (which gave him the name “Killshot”), so this changed attitude makes sense.

Killshot hits a very modified Michinoku Driver on Argenis to pick up the victory. Winner: Killshot

Backstage Segment
Dragon Azteca Jr. approaches Black Lotus, who has been working with Dario Cueto for months. They both have studied under the original Dragon Azteca, and it seems that Black Lotus is only working for Cueto because she has to. When the time is right, Black Lotus will make a move, but for now it is not clear what that is.

Daga vs. Texano
Daga is making his debut in the Temple tonight, and we do not know much about the new luchador, but he is ready to make an impact. Vampiro informs us that Daga is fond of the Japanese Strong Style type of wrestling, which features very stiff shots. His opponent, Texano, is no easy feat, being the youngest and longest reigning AAA Mega Champion of all time.

Whoever wins this match will win one of the seven Aztec medallions. These medallions make up the Gift of the Gods Championship, which can be cashed in one week in advance for a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity.

Daga gives an impressive showing in his debut, but Texano lands the sit-out powerbomb on the new luchador to win the match, and an Aztec medallion. Winner: Texano

Dragon Azteca Jr., Rey Mysterio, & Prince Puma vs. Johnny Mundo, Taya, & Cage
Rey Mysterio and Prince Puma are perhaps the biggest fan favorites in the Trios tournament, if not the Temple, and Dragon Azteca has been shown love since he trained with Mysterio. Mundo, Taya, and Cage are great individual luchadores, but there is too much tension in this team for them to work as a unit.

After Johnny Mundo gets hit with a 619 and a 630 Splash, Dragon Azteca Jr., Prince Puma and Rey Mysterio move on to the semifinals of the Trios tournament. Winners: Dragon Azteca Jr., Rey Mysterio, & Prince Puma
