Lucha Underground S1E22 Recap: Mask vs. Mask

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, owner and promoter Dario Cueto announced a new championship: The Lucha Underground Trios Championship. As opposed to a traditional two-person tag team championship that most wrestling fans are used to, the Trios Championship is strictly for teams of three. In order to crown the first-ever Trios Champions, Dario Cueto set up a tournament that will last for four weeks, with the winners being crowned champions. Last week’s episode featured the first match of the tournament, with Big Ryck, The Mack, and Killshot picking up a victory over Sexy Star, Super Fly, and Pentagon Jr..

In singles competition, we saw Johnny Mundo barely get a win over Angélico, possibly increasing his chances at a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity. The “Best of 5” series between Aerostar and Drago also continued, with Drago picking up a much needed victory, bringing the series to sudden death.

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground will feature another match in the Trios Championship tournament, with the unlikely team of Son of Havoc, Ivelisse and Angélico.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is in his office with Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma and Konnan to talk about the Trios Championship that was announced last week. Cueto says that since he wants these new titles to be just as important as the Lucha Underground Championship, so Prince Puma will have to find two partners. The team Prince Puma assembles will take on a team led by King Cuerno, who is Prince Puma’s opponent tonight. Before Puma leaves, Cueto makes Prince Puma’s match against King Cuerno tonight for the Lucha Underground Championship.

Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, & Angélico vs. Drago, Aerostar, & Fenix
Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico have been in a feud over the last month or so, involving multiple attempts for Son of Havoc and Ivelisse to defeat Angélico. Until last week, Son of Havoc and Ivelisse were dating, but during his match last week, Son of Havoc dumped Ivelisse.

Their opponents also have some tensions. Fenix has seemingly wrapped up a feud with Mil Muertes, but if Catrina is still on his side, there a bit of mystery left with him. Aerostar and Drago have been competing in a “Best of 5” series, with Drago making the series 2-2 last week. As the series goes on, they have transitioned from showing mutual respect to having animosity between each other.

During the match, Son of Havoc goes to tag Ivelisse, but she walks away from the tag and starts to walk to the back. Luckily for Son of Havoc, Drago and Aerostar started getting too heated, and Son of Havoc took advantage, hitting a Shooting Star Press on Drago for the win. Winners: Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, & Angélico

Sexy Star vs. Super Fly
Last week, Sexy Star and Super Fly teamed up with Pentagon Jr., and were eliminated from the Trios tournament. After the match, Sexy Star saved Super Fly having his arm broken by Pentagon Jr..

Before the match starts, Dario Cueto exits his office to announce that since both of these competitors are friends, he has to put something on the line to make the match more violent and dramatic. To increase the tension, he makes this an impromptu Mask vs. Mask match. The loser of this match will be unmasked, and in the lucha culture, they will also lose their honor and dignity.

After Super Fly misses a moonsault, Sexy Star rolls up Super Fly for the win, causing Super Fly to remove his mask. Winner: Sexy Star

After Super Fly unmasks, Pentagon Jr. runs down to the ring, knocks Sexy Star out of the ring, and proceeds to break the arm of the already humiliated Super Fly.

Prince Puma (w/Hernandez & Johnny Mundo) vs. King Cuerno (w/Cage & Texano) – Lucha Underground Championship
With both of these teams being in the running for the Trios Championship, however this title match ends will increase the tension throughout the tournament. Prince Puma has successfully defended the Lucha Underground Championship against Johnny Mundo, Fenix, and Cage, but with the allies at ringside, this might be Puma’s toughest challenge yet.

Puma denies help from his allies, and hits King Cuerno with a 630 splash to retain the title. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Prince Puma

After the match, the two teams brawl until the end of this episode of Lucha Underground.
