Lucha Underground Recap: The Monster vs. The Machine

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, both the Gift of the Gods Championship and the Trios Championships were defended in the same night. Tonight, two titles are defended again with the former Trios Champions (Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma, and Dragon Azteca Jr.) getting their rematch, and Matanza Cueto defending the Lucha Underground Championship against Cage.

Son of Havoc vs. Daga
Son of Havoc has been very successful during his time in Temple, earning the Trios Championship titles with Angélico and Ivelisse twice. Daga, who is a lot newer to Lucha Underground, has been impressive, but has not seen much success. Daga lost his debut match to Texano, and his last victory was practically handed to him by Kobra Moon. Daga needs to win this match in order to prove something to the audience, and prove that he is more than just hype from the commentators.

During the match, Kobra Moon comes down to the ring to cheer on Daga. Kobra Moon tries to prevent Son of Havoc from hitting an aerial attack from the top turnbuckle, but to no avail. Son of Havoc shakes off Kobra Moon, and hits a Shooting Star Press on Daga for the win. Winner: Son of Havoc

After the match, Kobra Moon clearly wants Daga in some sort of romantic way, and Daga does not want anything to do with his admirer.

Rey Mysterio, Dragon Azteca Jr., & Prince Puma vs. Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, & PJ Black (c) (w/Taya) – Lucha Underground Trios Championship
Last week, the current Trios Champions challenged Rey Mysterio, Dragon Azteca Jr., and Prince Puma to a Trios Championship match and won the titles in a very underhanded fashion. While the referee was knocked out during the match, PJ Black, Jack Evans, and Johnny Mundo spent the entire time hitting their opponents with low blows. This was very effective, and after taking advantage of the situation, they became the new Trios Champions.

It is important to note that Taya, along with Johnny Mundo, attacked Fenix backstage last week. Fenix was the original partner for Evans and Black since the three luchadores teamed up in the Trios tournament, but after the backstage assault, Mundo snuck his way into the Trios Championship match. The win last week would give Johnny Mundo his first taste of Lucha Underground championship gold after being in the Temple since day one.

While referee Marty Elias is distracted by Taya on the ring apron, and Johnny Mundo takes advantage by hitting Dragon Azteca Jr. with a low blow, which seems to be the theme for this Trios team. After witnessing the underhanded tactics, Prince Puma lets emotions get the best of him and hits Johnny Mundo with a low blow of his own, right in front of the referee. Winners, and STILL Trios Champions: Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, & PJ Black

Backstage Segment
Dragon Azteca Jr. found the cage where the Lucha Underground Champion, Matanza Cueto, is kept. While looking at the cage, he is found by Black Lotus, who stops Dragon Azteca Jr. from completing his mission. The reason for stopping him is because according to Black Lotus, it was not Matanza who killed her parents, but it was the original Dragon Azteca instead. Dragon Azteca Jr. leaves while denying that what Black Lotus said is true.

Cage vs. Matanza Cueto (w/Dario Cueto) – Lucha Underground Championship
The last time we saw Matanza Cueto, he defeated Mil Muertes in Graver Consequences by slamming him into a coffin and locking it shut. This was another example of Matanza soundly defeating his opponents. Tonight, The Machine might be Matanza’s toughest challenge yet.

Over the last few weeks, Cage has steamrolled over every who has been in his was in the Temple, and it culminated last week when he defeated Chavo Guerrero for the Gift of the Gods Championship. After winning the Gift of the Gods Championship, he immediately cashed it in for his Lucha Underground Championship match tonight.

Cage has arguably the most impressive athletic showing in the history of the Temple, but it is not enough to stop Matanza. Matanza hits the Wrath of the Gods on Cage for the victory. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Matanza Cueto
