Lucha Underground Recap: The Cueto Cup Begins

Photo from El Rey Network

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground is all about one thing: The Cueto Cup. 32 members of the Lucha Underground roster will compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine who will face Johnny Mundo/Rey Mysterio for the Lucha Underground Championship at Ultima Lucha Tres.

Opening Segment
Lucha Underground starts off with Dario Cueto building the bracket for the Cueto Cup when Pentagon Dark walks in unannounced. Pentagon is on the hunt for Black Lotus, but Cueto does not know of her whereabouts (or at least that’s what he says). Pentagon starts grabbing Cueto, but El Jefe offers a compromise. Pentagon is entered in the Cueto Cup, and he threatens to break Dario Cueto’s bones if he doesn’t walk out of Ultima Lucha Tres with Aztec Gold.

Mala Suerte vs. The Mack – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
The Mack just came off of the biggest matches in his Lucha Underground career, and this is the start of him getting another Lucha Underground Championship opportunity. Mack takes on Mala Suerte of the Rabbit Tribe. The Tribe is led by Paul London (former WWE Tag Team Champion with Brian Kendrick) and is known for their very unusual style of wrestling with personalities inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

The Mack dodges a Swanton Bomb attempt from Mala Suerte, and it is all in Mack’s favor for the rest of the match. Mack pounces Suerte, then finishes him off with his version of the Stone Cold Stunner. Mala Suerte had not been featured much before this match, but the fans in attendance chant him loudly in support of his impressive performance. Winner: The Mack | Eliminated: Mala Suerte

The Mack moves to the second round of the Cueto Cup, where he will either face Famous B or Texano.

Backstage Segment
When Cage defeated Texano to win the “ultimate opportunity,” he earned a gauntlet that gave him unworldly power. Dario Cueto approaches Cage backstage and tells him of a man who helped get this gauntlet for him, and this man wants to meet him. Cage is not interested, but Cueto makes it sound like he doesn’t have much of a choice.

Argenis vs. Pentagon Dark – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
Argenis is a very talented luchador, but Pentagon Dark is back with a vengeance. The last time Pentagon was in the Temple, one of his arms was broken by Black Lotus and the other arm was broken by El Dragon Azteca Jr. Every time Pentagon returns he gets stronger, and this could be an indication of him being even stronger than before.

Argenis holds his own with incredible lucha libre technique, but Pentagon Dark is able to take him out. After superkicking Argenis in the corner, Pentagon puts Argenis away with a Package Piledriver to advance to the second round, where he will face Aerostar or Drago. Winner: Pentagon Dark | Eliminated: Argenis

After the match, Pentagon Dark returns to his old ways by breaking Argenis’ arms for the second time in Lucha Underground history.

Famous B (w/Brenda) vs. Texano – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
Before the match starts, Famous B says he does not want to fight Texano, but instead, he wants to represent him. He even dresses up in an elaborate cowboy outfit to appeal to Texan. Famous B offers to lay down for the free pin, but Texano doesn’t take the win that easily. He picks Famous B up at the two-count, then finishes him off with a powerbomb. Winner: Texano | Eliminated: Famous B

Aerostar vs. Drago (w/Kobra Moon) – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
The history between Aerostar and Drago goes way back. The two incredible luchadores made waves when they competed in a Best of Five Series, then their mutual respect led to them joining forces with Fenix to become Lucha Underground Trios Champions. They defended their titles last week against Vibora and Pindar, but it turned out that Kobra Moon had some sort of control over Drago and Drago turned on his own team. Drago would then win the Trios Championships again, but with Vibora and Pindar.

Aerostar tries to tie Drago up with his own move, but Drago counters it and uses it to pick up the victory. Drago moves on to Round Two where he will take on Pentagon Dark. After the match, Kobra Moon commands Drago to continue the assault on Aerostar, which he obeys before the show ends. Winner: Drago | Eliminated: Aerostar
