Lucha Underground Recap: Championship Rematch

Photo from El Rey Network

Last week, Lucha Underground finally made its mid-season return with the All Night Long Match for the Lucha Underground Championship between Johnny Mundo and The Mack. Tonight, both men compete for the title again, and if they don’t go All Night Long for the second time, there will be more scheduled for the show.

Opening Segment
The show starts with Prince Puma have a bit of a mental breakdown regarding his recent allegiance with Vampiro. Rey Mysterio has known Vampiro for a couple decades, so he warns Puma that Vampiro is not trying to be his friend, but instead, he is using Puma for his own agenda. Puma does not buy it, and he says that Mysterio is not his friend either. After Puma leaves, Vampiro appears behind Mysterio to threaten him. If Mysterio doesn’t leave Puma alone, Vampiro will “send him to hell.”

Johnny Mundo (c) vs. The Mack – Lucha Underground Championship
Because the Lucha Underground Championship match between The Mack and Johnny Mundo ended in a draw, Dario Cueto requests a rematch. Cueto says that “there are no ties in [his] Temple.” Mundo has been able to escape with the title on a few occasions, but since The Mack has an hour of wrestling experience against him, Mack might be able to scout out all of Mundo’s tricks.

Before the match starts, Dario Cueto exits his office to announce “Sudden Death.” There is only one fall to a finish, and since the All Night Long stipulation favored Johnny Mundo, Cueto announces a stipulation in the favor of The Mack: Falls Count Anywhere.

The Mack is able to fend off Ricky Mandel and PJ Black, but Taya was still available to help out Johnny Mundo. Taya prevents The Mack from doing anything, and Johnny Mundo takes advantage to Sunset Flip Powerbomb Mack onto tons of steel stairs, and he gets the pinfall victory outside the ring. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Johnny Mundo

In-ring Segment
Dario Cueto comes down to the ring, and according to Matt Striker, he going to have “earth shattering” news regarding the upcoming Ultima Lucha Tres. Before revealing his huge announcement, he pats himself on the back for everything he has introduced this season, from Dario’s Dial of Doom to the Ultimate Opportunity.

Cueto reveals a new event called “The Cueto Cup.” Beginning next week, 32 luchadores will compete in a single-elimination tournament. Whoever wins receives a trophy and a guaranteed Lucha Underground Championship opportunity at Ultima Lucha Tres.

Cueto also announces Johnny Mundo’s next Lucha Underground Championship defense. On the same night of the Cueto Cup Finals, Mundo will defend his title against the King of Lucha Libre, Rey Mysterio. Whoever wins that match will face the winner of the Cueto Cup at Ultima Lucha Tres.

Fenix, Aerostar, & Drago (c) vs. Vibora, Pindar, & Kobra Moon – Lucha Underground Trios Championships
Since the beginning of the season, Kobra Moon has had a weird obsession with Drago. For a couple weeks, she managed to brainwash him to out herself and her lizard/human allies.

The Trios Champions are some of the best luchadores that Lucha Underground has to offer. Drago and Aerostar made huge waves when they competed in a Best of Five Series, and Fenix is also a former Lucha Underground Champion.

While Fenix is destroyed with a Tombstone Piledriver outside the ring, Aerostar tries to tag in Drago. Instead of accepting the tag, Drago spits green mist into his partner’s eyes. Drago then walks over to the other corner of the ring, and it turns out that Kobra Moon wasn’t ever officially in the match. Pindar then tags Drago, which the referee allows, and Drago covers his partner to win the Trios Championships with a new team. Winners (via a bunch of shenanigans): Drago, Pindar, & Vibora

Backstage Segment
Johnny Mundo gets cleaned up after successfully retaining his Lucha Underground Championship, and he starts getting ready for celebrating his victory with Ricky Mandel. Taya joins them and brings Mundo the “bad news” that he is defending his title against Rey Mysterio. Mundo immediately starts going to leave for his dojo, still in his towel from his shower. Taya questions this, but Mundo says that “there’s no time for pants.”

Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) vs. Prince Puma – Boyle Heights Street Fight
A Boyle Heights Street Fight is the same as a regular street fight. The only difference is that the Lucha Underground Temple is located in Boyle Heights, California. Mil Muertes and Prince Puma have a storied past that goes all the way back the first Ultima Lucha where Muertes captured the Lucha Underground Championship from Puma. Matt Striker reveals that both of these men are part of the Cueto Cup, and a win here would give either competitor tremendous momentum.

Prince Puma hits Mil Muertes with the 630 Splash, but Catrina prevents him from getting the cover by hitting him with the Aztec Stone. Vampiro evens things out by handing Puma a brick, which Puma hits Muertes’ skull with to finish the match. Winner (via brick): Prince Puma
