Lucha Underground Recap: Round Two… Fight!

Photo from El Rey Network

If you have been watching Lucha Underground at all over the past couple of months, you know that it is all about the Cueto Cup. This time, however, is the beginning of the second round. 16 competitors remain in a single-elimination tournament with the winner going onto Ultima Lucha Tres to face either Johnny Mundo or Rey Mysterio for the Lucha Underground Championship.

Jeremiah Crane vs. Taya – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
Both Jeremiah Crane and Taya impressed in the first round of the Cueto Cup. Crane pulled off somewhat of an upset in a very brutal match against Killshot, while Taya defeated the ever sleazy Joey Ryan. With the brutal style of Crane, Taya is going to have to be more physical than she has ever been in the Temple.

Since Taya helped screw Sexy Star out of her first round match, Sexy Star decides to distract Taya and return the favor. Crane takes advantage to hit the double underhook piledriver for the win. Sexy Star then enters the ring and hits Taya with the same brass knuckled that Taya introduced last week. Winner: Jeremiah Crane | Eliminated: Taya

Backstage Segment
Fenix and Aerostar are talking backstage about Drago. A few weeks ago, Drago turned on them to shift the Lucha Underground Trios Championships to the Reptile Tribe. Fenix thinks that Drago will snap out of it, but Aerostar is not so sure. Aerostar, after all, can time travel, so he does not have much optimism about anything. Fenix then asks Aerostar if he knows whether or not he will win later in his match tonight, and Aerostar toys with him without giving an answer.

Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) vs. Paul London – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
These are two very different competitors. Mil Muertes is a former Lucha Underground Champion who is perhaps the most dominant force The Temple has ever seen. Paul London, on the other hand, is a former WWE Tag Team Champion who seems a little out there these days. London is the leader of the Rabbit Tribe, a psychoactively enhanced group that seems to be straight out of Alice in Wonderland.

London has the Rabbit Tribe distract Mil Muertes for a split second, giving him an opportunity to hit two consecutive Shooting Star Presses. Muertes kicks out of both, and London spends too much time arguing with the referee. Muertes takes advantage, hitting the Reaper’s Trident and Flatliner to advance to the third round. Winner: Mil Muertes | Eliminated: Paul London

Backstage Segment
Texano and Brena (Famous B’s assistant) are seen at a bar and Texano orders both of them drinks. It seems like Brenda is sweet talking Texano until she calls him “boring” and “dull.” At first, this angers Texano, but she is able to calm him down. In the background is Famous B, who makes it obvious that this is his plan all along.

Announcements
Before the next match gets underway, Matt Striker and Vampiro announces the matches taking place on next week’s episode. Cage will take on Pindar of the Reptile Tribe (also one-third of the current Lucha Underground Trios Champions), PJ Black faces Prince Puma, and Dante Fox will go head-to-head with Son of Havoc.

Marty “The Moth” Martinez (w/Mariposa) vs. Fenix – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
Marty “The Moth” Martinez and Fenix have one thing in common (and only one): they love ring announcer Melissa Santos. Martinez has been obsessed with Santos since he debuted in the Temple, and the extent of his obsession was revealed a few weeks ago. Fenix and Santos have a consensual relationship going on, and Santos said she is putting her money on Fenix to win the whole tournament. In the first round, Fenix defeated Mariposa (Martinez’s sister), while Martinez defeated Saltador of the Rabbit Tribe.

Mariposa looks to hit Fenix with a mysterious lunch box when Melissa Santos actually gets involved and prevents her from doing so. This gives Fenix enough time to roll him up with a unique pinning combination to advance to the second round. Winner: Fenix | Eliminated: Marty “The Moth” Martinez

The second the match ends, Martinez cracks Fenix over the skull with the lunch box anyway. He pulls a fork out of the box and repeatedly stabs Fenix in the forehead while Mariposa forces Santos to watch. It is perhaps one of the most disturbing things to ever transpire in the Temple.
