Lucha Underground Recap: Mysterio Returns to Action

Photo from El Rey Network

Tonight, Lucha Underground finishes up the second round of the Cueto Cup while also featuring the in-ring return of Rey Mysterio. The Mack will take on Texano while Pentagon Dark will face Drago, both in tournament matches. In the main event, Mysterio will face PJ Black of the Worldwide Underground.

The Mack vs. Texano – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
To kick off the Cueto Cup, The Mack had a surprisingly competitive match against Mala Suerte of the Rabbit Tribe just a few weeks removed from almost capturing the Lucha Underground Championship. Texano’s first match in the Cueto Cup was nothing close to competitive. Texano was matched up against Famous B, who tried to recruit the former AAA World Champion to his “Get Fame” initiative. Texano refused and immediately knocked Famous B out, advancing to his first real challenge of the tournament.

The Mack looks to have Texano dead to rights, but Famous B distracts Mack from behind and shoots him with a water pistol. Mack is clearly unfazed and he hits Famous B with a stunner, sending him flying out of the ring. Texano takes advantage of this distraction by hitting The Mack with a sit-out powerbomb to advance to the third round. Winner: Texano | Eliminated: The Mack

Backstage Segment
After the match ends, we switch gears to a bar where Son of Havoc is ordering a drink. When the bartender slides him a drink, it is stopped by Son of Madness. Havoc immediately starts to fight him, and while the two brawl, Madness tries to talk things out. Madness says that Havoc turned his back on the cult and he should return, but Havoc says that that will never happen.

After the fight, we go back to the Temple where the Rabbit Tribe is recovering from their losses in the Cueto Cup. Mascarita Sagrada, who they worship as a God-like figure, approaches them with a big box as a gift. A note on the box says it might bring them luck, and after sifting through all of the packing peanuts, they pull out a rabbit’s foot.

Pentagon Dark vs. Drago (w/Kobra Moon) – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
Since Drago is still brainwashed (according to Matt Striker) by Kobra Moon, he is accompanied to the ring by Moon while holding the Trios Championship gold that he screwed Aerostar and Fenix out of. His opponent, Pentagon Dark, defeated Argenis in the first round of the Cueto Cup to advance to the second round while Drago defeated his former teammate, Aerostar.

Drago gets a good amount of offense in, but once Pentagon Dark takes the offensive, he goes full steam ahead to the end of the match. After Drago somehow kicks out of the Penta-can (Mexican/Canadian) Destroyer, Pentagon Dark picks him up for the package piledriver, sealing his spot in the third round. Winner: Pentagon Dark | Eliminated: Drago

After the match, Pentagon Dark runs into Catrina backstage. She remembers what Pentagon did to Mil Muertes at Aztec Warfare, ruining his chances of winning by attacking him during the match (Pentagon was not one of the 20 entrants in this edition of Aztec Warfare). Before Catrina leaves, she warns him about the Cueto Cup, insinuating that he should be on his toes.

Rey Mysterio vs. PJ Black
For the first time in several weeks, there is a match that does not have to do with the Cueto Cup. PJ Black lost his tournament match last week against Prince Puma and he wanted a chance to redeem himself, so Lucha Underground promoter Dario Cueto gave him a match against the King of Lucha Libre, Rey Mysterio. This is Mysterio’s first match in quite some time, and he will need the warm-up before facing Johnny Mundo in a few weeks for the Lucha Underground Championship.

Mysterio looks to hit Black with a Tornado DDT but when he swings his legs, he knocks out referee Marty Elias. Mysterio doesn’t notice and attempts the cover, but he is attacked from behind by Johnny Mundo. After Mysterio is attacked by Mundo, Black, and Jack Evans, he is saved by El Dragon Azteca. Well, he is almost saved. Taya appears to take him out and Black goes for the cover, but Mysterio kicks out at 2.9.

When Mysterio comes to, he manages to hit Black with the 619 and follows it with a springboard Frog Splash to pick up the win. Winner: Rey Mysterio
