Lucha Underground S1E38 Recap: Ultima Lucha Part I

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, Dario Cueto made two huge announcements. The first announcement was the unveiling of the Gift of the Gods Championship. The seven Aztec medallion owners will compete in a seven-way match for the Gift of the Gods Championship. The owner of the championship will be able to cash it in for a guaranteed Lucha Underground Championship opportunity, but it must be one week in advance so Dario Cueto can promote the show. The biggest announcement of the night however, is that since Ultima Lucha is such a big event, it starts tonight, and will last two weeks.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto goes to the cages where he has Black Lotus and Dario Cueto’s brother, Matanza Cueto, locked up. Cueto lets Black Lotus know that she should not be mad at Matanza Cueto, because it was not him that killed her parents. According to Dario Cueto, the man that killed her parents is El Dragon Azteca.

The Mack vs. Cage – Falls Count Anywhere
Several weeks ago, Cage attacked The Mack in the locker room to put himself in a Trios Championship match, which started the feud between these two. Over the last few weeks, Cage and The Mack have had normal singles matches, but The Mack was able to roll up Cage very quickly on both occasions. This made Cage furious, and after their match last week, they brawled all over the Temple, leading to Dario Cueto making this match official.

Before The Mack even starts going down the stairs, Cage attacks him to kick things off right away. Since this match is a Falls Count Anywhere match, The Mack and Cage never have to be in the ring to score a fall over each other.

Up on the perch, Cage hits a devastating suplex on The Mack, followed by a curb stomp through a cinder block to put The Mack away, and win the first-ever match at Ultima Lucha. Winner: Cage

Disciples of Death (w/Catrina) vs. Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, & Angélico (c) – Tornado Tag Match (Trios Championship)
When the Trios Championship was revealed, Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico overcame the odds to win the Trios Championship tournament and become the inaugural Trios Champions. After successfully retaining their titles against The Crew in a ladder match, they might face their toughest challege yet in the Disciples of Death. It doesn’t help that Ivelisse is still suffering from an ankle injury, which essentially makes this match 3-on-2 (or 4-on-2 if you count Catrina).

The Disciples of Death made their debut when Mil Muertes returned to the Temple, and have been dominant since. After Angélico jumps off of the perch onto two of the Disciples, Catrina goes to the middle of the ring and uses the stone to revive the Disciples of Death. Ivelisse tries to take down Catrina, but after Catrina knocks Ivelisse out with the mysterious stone, the Disciples of Death cover Ivelisse to become the new Trios Champions. After the match, Catrina gave Ivelisse a Lick of Death. Winners, and NEW Trios Champions: Disciples of Death

Drago vs. Hernandez – Believer’s Backlash
Last week, Dario Cueto announced this new match concept, which encourages fan interactivity. This match will end in one fall, but the twist is that if Hernandez goes to the outside of the ring, a select handful of fans can use a leather strap on Hernandez as they wish. However, if the Believers hit Hernandez, Hernandez can hit back.

After the Believers hit Hernandez with the straps, and leave some nasty welts, Hernandez has avoided being at ringside at all costs.

After sending Hernandez through a table, Drago rolls Hernandez into the ring, and hits him with a splash from the top rope to win the first-ever Believer’s Backlash match, and to end the first part of Ultima Lucha. Winner: Drago

Before the show ends, El Dragon Azteca enters the Temple, with hopes of saving Black Lotus.
