Lucha Underground Recap: Cueto Cup Semifinals

Photo from El Rey Network

This week’s episode of Lucha Underground sets up for the biggest night the Temple has seen in a while. Before the Cueto Cup ends next week, there are two semifinal matches to determine which two luchadores will compete in the finals. Two former Lucha Underground Champions battle as Prince Puma takes on Fenix, and Pentagon Dark squares off with Mil Muertes.

Opening Segment
Cage is working out in the Temple when Catrina appears out of nowhere. Catrina warns the Machine that while he wields his gauntlet for now, eventually it will start wielding him. She wants him to hand it over, but since the gauntlet gives him unfathomable power, he decides he is going to take the hard way. Cage tries to sucker punch Catrina, but she disappears before it could land.

We switch gears to Dario Cueto with Joey Ryan entering his office. Ryan was instructed previously by El Jefe to report anything suspicious, and he has “something big.” Veneno, a new luchador that debuted in the Cueto Cup, is reported to be Cortez Castro. Castro and Ryan worked together in an undercover investigation to take down Dario Cueto and those working with him, but Ryan decided to side with Cueto instead of his partner. Cueto decides to expose him in a traditional manner. Next week, Veneno will face Sexy Star in a Mask vs. Mask match.

Fenix vs. Prince Puma – The Cueto Cup (Round Four, Semifinals)
The Cueto Cup is rapidly coming to an end with only three matches to go. Fenix and Prince Puma have gone through several matches to get to this point, and both are former Lucha Underground Champions looking for another reign. Puma defeated Ricky Mandel, PJ Black, and Dante Fox to get here, while Fenix defeated Mariposa, Marty “The Moth” Martinez, and Pindar to advance to the semifinals. The winner of this match will advance to the finals next week to face either Pentagon Dark or Mil Muertes to claim the first-ever Cueto Cup.

While Fenix heads to the top rope, Marty “The Moth” Martinez appears out of nowhere and starts approaching Melissa Santos, who he has been more or less stalking for weeks. Fenix notices this and instead of attacking Puma, he moonsaults onto Martinez to protect his girlfriend. Unfortunately, this leads to Prince Puma getting the edge in the match and after a 630 Splash, the face of Lucha Underground is headed to the finals. It sure seems like Fenix and Martinez are going to square off at Ultima Lucha Tres, but nothing is confirmed at this point. Winner: Prince Puma | Eliminated: Fenix

Backstage Segment
Mil Muertes is hitting a punching bag in preparation for his match against Pentagon Dark when Cage attacks him with a weight, then drops it on his back for further punishment. Catrina uses her Aztec Stone to get Muertes back on his feet and instructs the Man of 1,000 Deaths to break Pentagon in half.

Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) vs. Pentagon Dark – The Cueto Cup (Round Four, Semifinals)
Because of Cage’s assault before the match, Muertes is visibly hurt while making his way to the ring. Muertes seems to have hurt ribs and an injury is the last thing you want to have against the aggressive Pentagon Dark. Lucha Underground is very good at holding off huge matches and after almost three seasons, this is the first time that Pentagon Dark and Mil Muertes are facing each other one-on-one in the Temple.

Muertes does hold a grudge against Pentagon, however. During Aztec Warfare, Pentagon Dark ruined Muertes’ chances of winning the match even though Pentagon wasn’t involved in the match. Whoever wins here will take on Prince Puma in the finals of the Cueto Cup, a man both competitors in this match have a history with.

After hitting Muertes with several superkicks, Pentagon Dark does the unthinkable and pins the former Lucha Underground Champion in the middle of the ring. While Muertes is crawling in the ring, Pentagon looks to break his arm, but the Man of 1,000 Deaths is able to escape thanks to the Aztec Stone. Next week, Pentagon faces Prince Puma in a huge showdown. Winner: Pentagon Dark | Eliminated: Mil Muertes

Johnny Mundo & Rey Mysterio Face Off
Dario Cueto set this face-off up for one reason: he loves when his luchadores trash talk each other. Mundo lays the personal stuff on early, talking poorly about Mysterio’s family before a fight explodes. Mysterio is outnumbered thanks to Mundo’s personal security and of course, the Worldwide Underground, who help assault Mysterio. While the Worldwide Underground think they’re safe, El Dragon Azteca Jr., Prince Puma, and Sexy Star enter the fray to help out the lucha libre legend.

Pentagon Dark returns to the ring to attack Puma, then Muertes attacks Pentagon, then Cage enters the ring and starts attacking everybody (but without the gauntlet). For some reason, Marty “The Moth” Martinez wants to join in on the fun, but he is immediately attacked by Fenix, but then Martinez gets help from Mariposa. This eventually turns into a brawl involving the entire roster from Jeremiah Crane to Killshot. Needless to say, Dario Cueto is watching this “roster riot” with a huge smile on his face.
