Lucha Underground Recap: The Cueto Cup Finals

Photo from El Rey Network

This episode of Lucha Underground is the one we have been waiting for for months, outside of Ultima Lucha Tres. Any match on tonight’s card could be the main event of any episode of Lucha Underground, but Dario Cueto has booked three historic matches for one hour of lucha libre. Announced just last week, Sexy Star will face Veneno in a Mask vs. Mask match. The first-ever Cueto Cup Finals will also be taking place, with Pentagon Dark facing Prince Puma. Lastly, Johnny Mundo will finally defend the Lucha Underground Championship against the King of Lucha Libre, Rey Mysterio.

Veneno vs. Sexy Star – Mask vs. Mask
This match was made last week after Joey Ryan told Dario Cueto that he believes the man under Veneno’s mask is Cortez Castro. Castro is an undercover cop who used to work with Joey Ryan in an investigation to take down Dario Cueto and the men he is working with. Castro was exposed, and Ryan sided with El Jefe to protect his job. After finding out the news last week, Cueto immediately scheduled this match to expose Castro again but this time, in front of the world.

The rules of a Mask vs. Mask match are pretty simple. The loser has to remove their mask, which is essentially the worst thing that can happen to a luchador. Sexy Star has been victorious in a Mask vs. Mask match before in the Temple, defeating the long forgotten Super Fly.

While the referee backs Sexy Star into the corner to keep her off of a downed Veneno, Joey Ryan runs to ringside and rips his mask off, revealing that it is indeed Cortez Castro. The referee calls for a no contest while the two former partners brawl. Winner (via pre-finish mask removal): Sexy Star

Pentagon Dark vs. Prince Puma – The Cueto Cup Finals
Just last week, Pentagon Dark and Prince Puma won their respective fourth round matches to make it to the finals of the first Cueto Cup ever. Pentagon Dark defeated former Lucha Underground Champion Mil Muertes while Prince Puma defeated another former Lucha Underground Champion in Fenix. These are two of the biggest stars that the Temple has to offer and this is one of the biggest events that this match could take place at.

After a lot of high-impact moves, Prince Puma gains the advantage. Puma hits Pentagon with the always impressive 630 splash and pins him for the victory. Vampiro enters the ring to raise the hand of his new apprentice, while his old apprentice walks away in defeat. With this victory, Dario Cueto congratulates Puma while announcing that he has earned a Lucha Underground Championship match at Ultima Lucha Tres against the winner of the next match. Winner: Prince Puma | Eliminated: Pentagon Dark

Johnny Mundo (c) vs. Rey Mysterio – Lucha Underground Championship
This match has been in the making for months. After Johnny Mundo retained the Lucha Underground Championship against The Mack, Rey Mysterio became the new #1 Contender for the Temple’s biggest prize. At first, it was just a competition to see who is the best luchador on the roster, but once Johnny Mundo physically and verbally attacked Mysterio’s family, it became personal.

Before the match begins, Matt Striker announces that outside interference from “anyone on the roster” is prohibited. This could just mean that it is a one-on-one fight, but it could also mean that this was specifically worded to have an unexpected participant interfere.

Rey Mysterio hits Johnny Mundo with the 619 and when he starts pinning the champion, Dario Cueto pulls the referee out of the ring. Cueto slaps Mysterio, but the challenger hits his boss with the 619. Mundo recovers at this point and uses the Lucha Underground Championship to hit Mysterio in the back of the head. Mundo then hits the End of the World to retain the title and to pencil his name in at Ultima Lucha Tres against Prince Puma. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Johnny Mundo
