The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced Monday that New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has been fined $5,000 for a two-handed slash delivered during Sunday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The fine is the maximum amount permitted under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred during Columbus’ 4-2 win over New York at Nationwide Arena. Barzal used his stick to deliver a forceful two-handed slash to Blue Jackets forward Mason Marchment. The league reviewed the play and determined it warranted supplementary discipline. No suspension was issued.

Barzal, one of the Islanders’ top offensive contributors, has not faced suspension or previous fines this season. Although the slash did not result in injury, the NHL cited it as unnecessary and avoidable, leading to the financial penalty.

Disciplinary actions such as fines and suspensions are part of the NHL’s ongoing effort to enforce safe play and deter dangerous behavior on the ice. Player safety remains a focal point, especially regarding stick infractions and altercations after the whistle.

The Islanders, currently battling for positioning in the Eastern Conference standings, will aim to regroup following the loss in Columbus. Barzal has been a consistent performer for New York and remains an integral part of the team’s offensive strategy.

Columbus, meanwhile, capitalized on its home-ice advantage in the contest, scoring four goals and limiting the Islanders to two. Marchment continued his solid play, contributing at both ends of the ice despite the incident with Barzal.

Barzal is expected to return to action with no additional disciplinary measures pending. The Islanders continue their road trip with upcoming matchups as they look to maintain their playoff aspirations during the second half of the season.

The NHL’s maximum fine limit remains set at $5,000 for players under the current CBA, though it serves as a warning rather than a significant penalty. Continued scrutiny of on-ice conduct remains a priority for the league office.
