May 20 Boxing Odds From The Fantasy Springs Casino

May 20 Boxing Odds – Golden Boy Promotions are at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California this coming Friday night, May 20th with a full boxing card that sees the featured fights air on Estrella TV.

The main event sees the vacant IBF North American title up for grabs as Eddie Gomez (18-1) takes on John Karl Sosa (13-1) in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds. In many ways, this is a comeback for Gomez, the 23-year-old who has fought just once in the last 18 months. We last saw him back in April of 2105 when he defeated Jonathan Batista on the undercard of Lucas Martin Matthysse versus Ruslan Provodnikov on HBO. In Sosa, he faces another 23-year -who has been labelled a prospect out of Puerto Rico. Sosa suffered the first setback of his career in his last fight, as he was stopped by Alan Sanchez (16-3-1) in November of 2015 on another card that aired on Estrella TV.

A co-feature bout at Lightweight is also getting a look from the sport books as Fidel Maldonado Jr (21-3) takes on Art Hoyhannisyan (17-2-2). Both men are at a crossroads in their careers where they find themselves in a must-win situation. For Hovhannisyan, he is 2-2 in his last four fights, and he first fought in July of 2014 so he is coming off a long layoff of almost 2 years. Hovhannisyan is now in his mid-30s and he will be facing a fighter 10 years younger in Maldonado Jr. As a 20-year-old back in 2012 the young prospect took 2 losses in a row but he put together a six-fight winning streak afterwards. In January of 2015 he lost a match to up-and-coming, undefeated Amir Imam (15-0), but he has put together two wins in a row since.

Undefeated Golden Boy talent appears on the undercard as super middleweight prospect D’metrius Ballard (12-0) and Lightweight up and comer Joseph Aguirre (12-0) are in 8 and 6 round bouts, respectively. Gigantic Chinese heavyweight Taishan Dong, who measures 7 feet tall and is so far 6-0 as a pro boxer, features on the undercard as well as he faces 3-1-1 Johnathan Rice.

These smaller Golden Boy shows are available via live stream in partnership with RINGTV. The stream usually includes the weigh-ins on the day before and normally the show has every fight on the card. Golden Boy has made a home of the Fantasy Springs Casino, where they have been consistently running shows for a few years now.

For observers of today’s boxing scene, the Golden Boy broadcast and the stream on RINGTV could potentially see GBP issue some type of statement about the recent actions of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who vacated the WBC’s Middleweight title. The reaction of the boxing world has not been good, it will be interesting to see if any type of statement gets made on this Friday’s show.
