The New York Knicks reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 after a 130-93 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday. The win was New York’s 11th straight playoff victory and completed its second consecutive postseason sweep.
Moments after the clincher, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew attention on social media. He tagged the city’s sanitation account and wrote, “I’d like to report a sweep,” according to the mayor’s post. The sanitation account replied, “CLEAN UP IN CLEVELAND!!”
Mamdani’s support for the Knicks has been on display throughout the postseason. He attended Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals at Madison Square Garden, where he was seen sitting in the arena’s upper level.
The mayor also directed commentary at opponents earlier in the playoffs. When discussing ticket prices for the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks, Mamdani quipped about former Hawks guard Trae Young, saying, “I blame Trae Young. I think it’s always important to blame Trae Young,” according to his remarks at the time.
New York will face the winner of the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. Game 1 is scheduled for June 3.
