Same city, new rookie home run king. Two years after Aaron Judge crushed 52 homers in the Bronx, Pete Alonso has now done so in Queens. The Polar Bear smashed his 53rd home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning off a pitch from Atlanta’s Mike Foltynewicz that hung over the plate just enough for Alonso to send it over the center field wall.

Alonso doesn’t just have the most home runs out of any rookie ever, he also leads the majors in home runs this season, with Cincinnati’s Eugenio Suarez following behind at 49.

If Alonso was already a lock for National League Rookie of the Year before breaking Judge’s, then this should make the voters throw away the key. Pete Alonso has made the Mets fun to watch again.

Alonso will look to add on to his record with one more game left in the season. Despite just missing out on the playoffs, the Mets have to be excited about what Alonso means for the future, as he has the potential to anchor their offense for years to come. Now that teams will have a full offseason to prepare for him, it will be interesting to see how Alonso builds off of his historic rookie season.
