The report says the New York Mets placed catcher Francisco Alvarez on the injured list Wednesday after he was diagnosed with a meniscus tear in his right knee and will undergo surgery.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he hopes Alvarez can return in six to eight weeks, but the manager added the club expects to have a clearer timetable after the procedure, per the report.
The injury occurred while Alvarez was taking a swing in the sixth inning of the Mets’ 10-2 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The report says Alvarez tested the knee with a team trainer and limped off the field.
The move is another setback for the last-place New York Mets, who already have starting position players Francisco Lindor, Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. on the injured list. The team is not sure when any of those players will be able to return, the report adds.
To fill the roster vacancy, the Mets called up catcher Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse. The report notes this is Senger’s second stint with the big-league club this season.
