ESPN will follow the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between hosts Mexico and South Africa live from El Estadio Azteca, providing insights and news throughout the game, according to ESPN.

The meeting reprises the tournament opener from the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg, which finished in a 1-1 draw. South Africa opened the scoring through Siphiwe Tshabalala, who netted the country’s first World Cup goal, and Rafael Márquez equalized for Mexico at Soccer City 16 years ago to the day.

South Africa’s 2010 campaign continued with a 3-0 loss to Uruguay in their next group game, and the side ultimately bowed out after finishing the group stage with a 2-1 victory over France. That history frames Bafana Bafana’s quest for a first knockout-stage appearance at the World Cup.

According to ESPN, coach Hugo Broos has said Bafana do not need what he called ‘Shabba magic’ this time. ESPN also reported that Bafana fans generally back Broos but have reservations about his striker selections. The network identified Mexico’s Gilberto Mora as a player set to emerge as a breakout star for the hosts.

Both teams enter the tournament with clear targets: South Africa seeking its first advancement to the knockout rounds, and Mexico aiming for its first-ever World Cup semifinal, according to ESPN. The opening match will set the tone for hosts and visitors as the 2026 tournament begins at one of Mexico City’s most storied venues.
