Former West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has described the difficulty of restarting his career after a car accident in 2024, saying he needed to put his ego to one side in order to secure a new club and get back on the pitch.

Antonio, who became a popular figure at West Ham for his versatility and work rate in attack, found himself in unfamiliar territory after the incident disrupted his playing trajectory. With his future uncertain, the forward said the process of finding a new team was far more challenging than he had anticipated.

Without going into extensive detail about the accident itself, Antonio focused on the professional and personal aftermath. He explained that the interruption to his career left him facing questions from clubs about his fitness, form, and long-term prospects. Instead of being courted as an established Premier League performer, he had to convince potential employers that he could still contribute at a high level.

According to Antonio, that shift in perception forced him to reassess how he approached negotiations and what he expected from the next stage of his career. He indicated that offers did not immediately match the status he had previously enjoyed, and that he was compelled to weigh his desire to play regular football against the pride that can come with having spent several years in England’s top flight.

He said this period required patience and humility, acknowledging that he had to “swallow” his ego, accept the reality of his situation, and focus on proving himself again rather than relying on past achievements. That meant being open to discussions he might earlier have dismissed, and prioritising an opportunity to play and rebuild momentum over holding out for ideal terms or a perfect role.

Antonio’s comments highlight the fragile nature of a football career, even for experienced professionals. A single event away from the pitch can alter a player’s market and force them into a reset. In his case, returning to action involved not only physical readiness but also a mental adjustment to a new phase, one where reputation alone was not enough to guarantee the next contract.

By sharing his experience, Antonio offered a glimpse into the pressures players can face when injuries or off-field incidents interrupt established careers. He framed his eventual move as a step driven by realism and determination, choosing to adapt and restart rather than cling to past status. While he did not reveal every detail of the move or the club involved, his account underlined that getting back into professional football required a willingness to compromise, rebuild, and, in his words, let go of ego in order to move forward.
