Veteran right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger has signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team confirmed Wednesday. The agreement includes an invitation to major league spring training, giving Clevinger the opportunity to earn a roster spot ahead of the 2026 MLB season.

Clevinger, 35, has spent eight seasons in the major leagues, previously pitching for the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, and Chicago White Sox. Known for his dynamic delivery and command on the mound, he has compiled a career ERA under 4.00, showing flashes of high-level performance throughout his career.

His most productive seasons came during his time with Cleveland, where he established himself as a consistent starter. After being traded to San Diego in 2020, Clevinger underwent Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for the 2021 season. He returned to MLB action in 2022 and later joined the White Sox, aiming to reestablish his form after the injury.

In his most recent major league season, Clevinger posted solid numbers despite limited appearances, demonstrating his ability to still contribute at the big league level. Now with Pittsburgh, he will compete for a role in a rotation that includes a mix of young prospects and experienced veterans.

The Pirates are coming off a rebuilding period and have shown an interest this offseason in adding experienced arms to bolster their pitching depth. By bringing Clevinger into camp, the organization is giving itself another veteran option who could potentially serve as a starter or long reliever.

Clevinger will report to the Pirates’ spring training facility in Bradenton, Florida, where team officials will evaluate his health, performance, and potential fit on the 26-man roster. His presence could also provide leadership and insight to younger pitchers within the organization.

Details about the financial terms of the minor league deal have not been disclosed. The Pirates have not announced a timeline for when a decision regarding Clevinger’s status might be made.
