Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Preview

The Champions Tour shifts to Saucier, Mississippi this week for the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. This year’s edition will feature some of the top golfers on the Champions Tour including Steve Stricker, Jose Maria Olazbal and defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez. With $1.6 million in prize money on the line including $240K for the winner, there will be a lot to play for this week at the Fallen Oaks Golf Club.

Event Details

Event: Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic

Category: Champions

Date: March 31-April 2

Location: Fallen Oak Golf Club, Saucier, Mississippi

Jimenez won this event last year with the best score of any winner from the last four years. The 53-year-old is coming off a runner-up finish at the Chubb Classic back in February and should be rested and focused heading in to this event. Jimenez will be among the favorites to win here once again with Stricker and Bernhard Langer in that conversation as well.

Past Five Winners

2016: Miguel Angel Jimenez -14

2015: David Frost -10

2014: Jeff Maggert -11

2013: Michael Allen -11

2012: Fred Couples -14

What To Know About The Course

This course is all about accuracy and hitting Greens In Regulation. There isn’t much need for power as long as you can put together solid GIR stats. The Putting numbers will also be important as it is all about finishing here. Experience should count for something again this week as well. Americans won each of the first five editions of this tournament. However, South Africa’s David Frost won this tournament in 2015, followed by Spain’s Jimenez winning it in 2016.

The Field

Stricker is listed as the sports betting favorite to win this event at +300 odds. Langer is right behind him at +600 odds to win outright, followed by Jimenez at +1000. Jerry Kelly, Kevin Sutherland and David Toms are all among the betting favorites. Meanwhile David Frost, who won this event in 2015, is listed as a +12500 long shot to repeat his success here at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.

A Good Matchup To Bet: David Frost over Kevin Sutherland

While Sutherland could be in for a decent outing this pick is more about fading in favor of Frost, who clearly isn’t getting the respect he deserves. Frost won this event in 2015 and is the all-time money leader at this tournament. The fact that he is available at +12500 makes him an absolute steal this week. Sutherland could finish in the top-25 and still finish behind Frost at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic this week.

Top-Five Pick: Miguel Angel Jimenez

Stricker and Langer are both decent bets to contend for the win this week. However, Jimenez offers better value than each of those two in terms of a top-five pick. Jimenez should be ready to roll following more than a month off since his runner-up finish at the Chubb Classic. He might not win this event outright again, but Jimenez should be in the mix for a top-five finish at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.
