MLB Betting: Picks For Wednesday, April 5

We’re two days into the baseball season and it has been a wildly entertaining start to the season. We had a fairly productive day with our MLB betting picks on Tuesday as we went 3-1 with our selections. We lost with the Tampa Bay Rays, who couldn’t get anything going against C.C. Sabathia and ended up losing 5-0 to the New York Yankees. However, we did win our other three MLB betting picks. We cashed with the San Francisco Giants, who clobbered the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4. We also got a win with the Chicago Cubs, who edged out the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. The Cubs now move to 1-1 on the season. Lastly, we also earned a 2-1 win with the Houston Astros, who got a strong start from Dallas Keuchel. He led the way to a win over the Seattle Mariners.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, all five AL East teams will be back in action. Here is a look at the best MLB betting picks for Wednesday.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Baltimore Orioles

Wednesday, 7:05 PM ET

The Orioles opened their season in style with a walk-off win over Toronto on Monday afternoon. Mark Trumbo picked up from where he left off last season with his first home run of the season. Now Baltimore will look to make it two in a row with Dylan Bundy on the mound. Bundy was excellent last season, but he struggled in grapefruit league action with a 7.41 ERA over five starts. The Blue Jays bats will be looking to jump on Bundy and if they get to him early then things could get ugly. Meanwhile, Toronto will counter with J.A. Happ, who went 20-4 last season. Happ went 2-0 with a 3.54 ERA against Baltimore last season and could be the perfect pitching option to help the Blue Jays get on track with a win.

MLB Betting Pick: Toronto

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Boston Red Sox

Wednesday, 7:10 PM ET

Chris Sale will make his highly anticipated debut for the Red Sox on Wednesday night. Considering the way Boston beat up on Pittsburgh in their opener, he should expect to win this game. Sale posted a 3.34 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with the Chicago White Sox last season. If he can post similar statistics this season he should finish with more than the 17 wins he registered a year ago. Meanwhile, the Pirates will counter with promising youngster Jameson Taillon. Taillon could be in line for an excellent season in the majors. However, facing the Red Sox at Fenway is a tall order. Taillon won’t have much room for error opposite Sale, so we will give Boston the nod in this matchup.

MLB Betting Pick: Boston

New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays

Wednesday, 7:10 PM ET

Michael Pineda will get the nod for the Yankees in the final game of their three-game set in Tampa Bay. However, Pineda went 0-3 with a 7.30 ERA against the Rays last season, so he might not be the best option. While Pineda had mostly pitched well in spring training, he is coming off a shaky outing. He gave up three runs in 1.2 innings of work against the Washington Nationals in his last start. However, prior to that, he had been dominating through his spring starts.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay will counter with Alex Cobb. Cobb posted a disastrous 8.59 ERA in his five starts a year ago so it will be very interesting to see how he performs in his first start of the season. Cobb has been dealing with back stiffness, so there is no guarantee he is at his best on Wednesday. He’s going to get the start but this is one of those injuries that’s in the grey area. We don’t know just how much it will affect him.

Both teams are capable of putting up big offensive totals in this matchup, but considering Pineda’s overall body of work we want to lean towards taking the Yankees. Pineda couldn’t figure out Tampa Bay last season. However, if he puts together a quality start in this one then the Yankees should be able to provide him with enough run support to pick up the win.
