MLB Draft is Tonight, Bruce to the Phillies and More

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

The Major League Baseball Draft is the least-hyped of all sports’ drafts, but it’s three days of chaos that’s still worth paying attention to. None of the players picked in Monday night’s first and second rounds will go directly to the Majors — or probably even be there a year from now — but many of them will be future contributors, and some will even be the stars of the next five to 10 years. The Baltimore Orioles are expected to take Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick, though that’s not set in stone. Meanwhile, in the big leagues, Jay Bruce is officially on the move from Seattle to Philadelphia, and Mets announcer and former star Ron Darling announces great news about his battle with cancer.

The first two rounds of the Draft are on Monday night, followed by eight more Tuesday and the remaining 30 (!) in rapid-fire style on Wednesday.

Adley Rutschman had an on-base percentage of nearly .600 this season for Oregon State, with whom he won a national championship last season. Is he going to switch from one orange organization to another?

Jay Bruce isn’t known as a great hitter, but he has 14 home runs this season and 300 for his career. He’ll be a threat off the bench for the NL East-leading Phillies.

Ron Darling announces he’ll return to work on the Mets broadcast after his thyroid cancer diagnosis. Great news.

A familiar name is joining the Cubs lineup on Monday. Remember Carlos Gonzalez?
