London is calling for Major League Baseball for the first time, and the sport is ready to jump across the pond for a two-game Red Sox-Yankees series this weekend. The trip figures to present plenty of good social media opportunities for the teams and players involved, too. Back stateside, Craig Kimbrel is ready to join the Chicago Cubs — and their beleaguered bullpen is surely glad to have him. And voting for the All-Star starters ends Thursday afternoon, so teams are putting out the full social media push to get their candidates’ totals up.

Major League Baseball started the season in Japan, hit plenty of usual stops in the U.S. and Canada, took the show to Mexico and now visits England for the first time.

A certain closer with a funky pre-delivery pose is headed for the north side. Only question is if he’ll become the closer immediately or if they’ll ease him in at all. FWIW, his Twitter bio says “Chicago Cubs closer.”

You’ve got to give MLB credit for this idea. Instead of the long slog of voting for six weeks, name some finalists and then give fans two days to decide. Lots of attention that way.

Teams are pulling out all the stops to garner votes for their guys, but no marketing campaign is going to work as well as the natural weirdness of Hunter Pence.

Joey Votto, national treasure. Except he’s Canadian. So maybe he’s a continental treasure.
