Ah yes, the infamous ‘mystery team’. Within the Gerrit Cole sweepstakes – involving Scott Boras – we should have seen this one coming.
Indeed per Jon Heyman on twitter, there is a team that is serious about acquiring Gerrit Cole aside from the known few. Notably, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, and Los Angeles Dodgers are the teams already known.
Hear there’s a mystery team on Cole. Hard to imagine anyone thinks they are coming in late and outbidding the Yankees and 2 LA teams (even if one’s in Anaheim). No idea the identity of said team, but that’s why it’s a mystery.

Now, let’s take a look at some teams who just could be the mystery team.

Obviously, those are a few teams with money to spend who might be in the market for a starting pitcher. Still, it’s likely that Cole ends up with one of those three teams listed at the top of this post if you’re picking odds favorites.
While this seems like it could drag on a while, it’s possible that this was just a ploy set up by super agent Boras. Without question, Boras has been known to sweeten the tea a little bit in the past by floating this type of report to a Heyman type. media person.
