MLB News: Yasiel Puig Trains with Sumo Wrestlers in Japan

Yasiel Puig seems to have found a new training partner, albeit in the unlikeliest of places. The 29-year-old outfielder posted a video of himself working on strength with a drill more fit for NFL linemen than baseball players: sumo wrestling.

You have to admire Puig’s appreciation of local culture when he travels. It is unclear if the workout caught the interest of any major league clubs, although if he continues to trend upward like he did in Cleveland, he may start a new sumo workout trend among MLB players.

Puig is coming off a year in which he split time between the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians after being traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his .267 batting average tied for his highest since 2014. He fared much better offensively in Cleveland though, hitting .297 for his highest average since his rookie year in which he hit for .315.

Things have been quiet in terms of his free agent market this winter, although there have been rumors about interest from the Miami Marlins and the San Francisco Giants, his former arch rival.
