MLS Fantasy: Recapping Week 22

The MLS fantasy soccer season continued with a lopsided result on Saturday setting the tone for a wild weekend with nine games on the schedule for Sunday. Toronto FC’s star striker was once again the top MLS fantasy performer at his position with a three-point game but it was New York City FC’s veteran midfielder that had already stolen the show with his incredible performance on Saturday standing as the top MLS fantasy score of the weekend.

Here is a look at the top individual MLS fantasy performances by position from Major League Soccer this past weekend.

GK: Alex Bono, Toronto FC

Toronto FC continued its strong two-way play in a 3-0 win over the Columbus Crew on Sunday with Bono holding his own in goal. Bono stopped all four shots he faced to secure the clean sheet victory in TFC’s second consecutive victory and he edged out FC Dallas’ Chris Seitz and Alex Kahn of Sporting KC for top fantasy honors at his position.

Honorable Mention: Chris Seitz, FC Dallas; Alex Kahn, Sporting KC

D: Atiba Harris, FC Dallas

FC Dallas registered a complete performance in its 2-0 win over the Vancouver Whiecaps with Harris producing the best fantasy score of any MLS defender over the weekend. Harris added an assist to go with his stellar defensive play in the clean sheet victory as FC Dallas earned at least a point for the fifth time in its last six games.

Honorable Mention: Cordell Cato, San Jose; Connor Lade, New York Red Bulls

M: Frank Lampard, New York City FC

Lampard absolutely lit it up for New York City FC in a lopsided 5-1 win over Colorado, leading the way with a hat trick and seven shots on target. The former Chelsea man put on an absolute clinic in his most complete MLS performance to date and there is no doubt he was the most impressive fantasy performer of the weekend.

M: Kellyn Acosta, FC Dallas

Acosta’s game-winning goal in FC Dallas’ 2-0 win over the Whitecaps was enough for him to join Lampard on this list despite the significant drop off in their fantasy scores. It was a relatively quiet weekend at the position and Acosta’s winner and four total shots had him edge out Seattle’s Cristian Roldan and Montreal’s Hernan Bernadello in this spot. Dallas is currently in first place in the Western Conference – and the MLS – with 44 points. Their 37 goals in 24 games are the best in the Western Conference and one of the main reasons why they’ve been a good source for MLS fantasy.

Honorable Mention: Cristian Roldan, Seattle; Hernan Bernadello, Montreal; Tony Taylor, New York City FC

F: Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC

While Lampard dominated in the midfield, it was Giovinco that produced the best fantasy score among MLS forwards for the second week in a row as he scored a goal and added two assists in a 3-0 win over the Crew. Giovinco has been on an absolute tear with six points over his last two weekend games for TFC and there is no reason to expect his elite level of production to slow down now that he has found his groove. Toronto has now moved up toe third place in the Eastern Conference standings with 30 points in 31 games. Although they are six points behind New York City, keep in mind that New York City has played 23 games so far this season.

F: Kevin Molino, Orlando City SC

Molino helped Orlando City break through with two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win over the New England Revolution. It was a welcome performance up front in a complimentary role to young sensation Cyle Larin and it was among the biggest reasons why Orlando City registered its first win in six games. Orlando City has played well at the offensive end even though they are still just eighth in the standings. They have scored 35 goals so far this season in just 21 games, which is among the best marks in the entire league.

Honorable Mention: Jacob Peterson, Sporting KC; Joao Plata, Real Salt Lake; Cyle Larin, Orlando City SC; Bradley Wright-Phillips, New York Red Bulls
