MLS Fantasy: The Top MLS Performers In Week 5

DC United earned its first win of the MLS fantasy season in impressive fashion with a lopsided 4-0 win over Vancouver. There is no doubt it was a surprising result after the Whitecaps had earned at least a point in three straight games but even after their lopsided win DC United isn’t the only team represented on this list. Here is a look at the top MLS fantasy performers from this past weekend by position.

GK: Tim Melia, Sporting KC

Sporting KC continued its torrid pace to the season with its fourth win in five games on Saturday. Melia was the star again in the 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls as he made six saves for the clean sheet victory and best MLS fantasy score of the weekend at his position. Sporting KC is now in first place in the Western Conference with 12 points through five games.

Honorable Mention: Nick Rimando, Real Salt Lake; Evan Bush, Montreal

D: Hassoun Camara, Montreal

Montreal earned a 2-0 win over the Columbus Crew thanks in big part to Camara’s performance. The veteran defender scored his first goal of the season in the 48th minute to give the Impact the 1-0 lead and that marker stood as the eventual game-winning goal. The Impact are now tied atop the Eastern Conference with nine points in five games. Their offense has led the way as they have tallied eight goals so far, which is second only to Orlando City in the East.

Honorable Mention: Chad Marshall, Seattle; Je-Vaughn Watson, New England

M: Luciano Acosta, DC United

DC United carried a 1-0 lead in to the second half of their match with Vancouver before exploding for three goals over the final 45 minutes for the 4-0 win. The four goals were more than the combined three goals they had scored in their first four games and Acosta was one of two substitutes that played a starring role. Acosta registered two assists and two shots in limited minutes and surprised everyone as this week’s top MLS fantasy midfielder. DC United still has just one win on the year and that has to do with the fact that they’ve given up nine goals in six games so far. Those nine goals are the second-most in the Eastern Conference only behind New York’s 11.

M: Giles Barnes, Houston

Barnes helped the Dynamo salvage a point in their 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders as they led for nearly 56 minutes before Chad Marshall evened the score in the first minute of injury time. Barnes has two goals and nine shots already this season and he was the biggest reason why Houston earned just its fifth point in five games with a draw over the weekend. The Dynamo are in eighth place in the Western Conference, which is a bit surprising considering their 12 goals are the most in the West. They now have one win, two draws and two losses on the year.

Honorable Mention: Kyle Bekker, Montreal; Kelyn Rowe, New England

F: Fabian Espindola, DC United

Espindola opened the scoring for DC United in the 39th minute and then added another late goal to complete an impressive fantasy performance. Espindola finished with two goals and six shots on target to lead DC to the victory and finish with the best fantasy score among MLS forwards.

F: Alvaro Saborio, DC United

Saborio was the other DC United substitute that really thrived this week and managed to earn a spot as one of the top fantasy performers. He certainly didn’t need much time as both of his goals came in a three-minute span in the 88th minute and then again in the first minute of injury time. The club will certainly be hoping the lopsided win marks a turning point in their season and there is a good chance Saborio will see more minutes in DC United’s next game against Toronto FC.

Honorable Mention: Fanendo Adi, Portland; Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC; Adrian Winter, Orlando City SC
