MONACO

After five games in a row without a defeat in all competitions, Monaco was heavily beaten by RB Leipzig at home, 4:1, in the UEFA Champions League Round 5 last Tuesday. It was a nightmare start for The Red and Whites when the centre-back Jemerson put the ball into his own net, and just three minutes later Jemerson made another mistake misplacing the pass which led to Timo Werner’s easy finishing. In the 31st minute, Timo Werner converted the penalty kick to make it 3:0, but Falcao cut the lead in the 43rd minute with a beautiful header. However, Naby Keita made it 4:1 in the 45th minute of the first half, and it was the end of the road for Monaco’s players. They took just three shots on Leipzig’s goal in the second half, and after this defeat, Monaco will finish at the bottom of the Group G table, as they are five points behind RB Leipzig with one round to go.

The Red and Whites also disappointed their fans last Friday, when they played a 1:1 draw with Amiens on the road in the 13th round of the French Ligue 1. In the first 45 minutes Monaco’s play was far below their standards, and after a half an hour they were one-goal down. They took just six shots in the first half, but they didn’t create any huge scoring opportunity. Quickly after the break, Amiens had a massive chance to double the lead, when Moussa Konate’s header went over the bar from the edge of the six-yard box. Monaco leveled the match in the 67th minute when the Montenegrian international Stefan Jovetic, who came off the bench, found the net with his right foot after Fabinho’s unselfish pass. Until the end of the game, Monaco had a few half-chances to get the second goal, but they certainly didn’t deserve to get all three points at Amiens.

After the first 13 rounds of the French Ligue 1, Monaco is sitting at the second spot of the table with 29 points, a 35:13 goal difference, and a form of DWWWL. They are six points behind the leader Paris SG, and three points in front of Lyon at the third spot. Monaco has earned 16 points on the home soil with a 21:4 goal difference, and a 5-1-0 record, while they’ve recorded four wins, one draw, and two losses on the road with a 14:9 goal difference. They have found the net in each of their previous eight Ligue 1 games, and they’ve managed to score in every single game in front of the home fans.

The 31-year old Columbian striker Radamel Falcao is the team’s leading scorer with 13 Ligue 1 goals in ten appearances, while the winger Keita Balde and the midfielder Adama Traore both added three goals so far. The winger Rony Lopes is the best assist-maker with five dishes in 13 appearances, also adding two goals to his name, while three players made four assists each so far – Joao Moutinho, Almamy Toure, and Jorge. The 22-year old winger Thomas Lemar added one goal and three dishes to his name in 10 apps this season. The centre-back Kamil Glik is another key player in Monaco’s squad, and he managed to score two goals in 13 games thus far, also adding three assists to his name.

The manager Leonardo Jardim s surely upset after a heavy defeat against RB Leipzig, and for the next match against Paris SG he will miss Thomas Lemar (shoulder injury), and the right-back Djibril Sidibe (osteitis pubis).

PARIS SG

The Parisians are from the other planet this season, and they continue to torture opponents in all competitions. After a convincing victory over Nantes, 4:1, in the previous round of the French Ligue 1, they’ve humiliated the Scottish champions Celtic, 7:1, in the UEFA Champions League Round 5. The visitors from Glasgow took the lead in the first minute of the match after Moussa Dembele’s brilliant strike, but shortly afterward Neymar scored a brace to show them who’s a boss at Parc des Princes. Until the halftime, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe made it 4:1, and it was obvious who’s going to get three points from this clash. In the second 45 minutes, we saw three more goals in Celtic’s net. Marco Verratti got his second goal of the season, Cavani completed the brace in the 79th minute, while Dani Alves scored a true beauty to make it 7:1!

Paris SG won nine out of their previous ten matches in all competitions, and they are still undefeated this season. In fact, just two teams managed to earn a draw against The Parisians – Montpellier (0:0), and Marseille (2:2), while they were victorious in all five games in the UEFA Champions League so far. After the first 13 rounds of the French Ligue 1, The Parisians are topping the table with 35 points, a 43:9 goal difference, and an 11-2-0 record. At home, they were perfect with seven wins out of seven games, and a 26:5 goal difference, while on the road they’ve recorded four victories and two draws with a 17:4 goal difference.

The 30-year old Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is playing in a tremendous form this season, and he has scored 21 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions, while he’s topping the Ligue 1 scoring chart with 15 goals in 12 apps. The Brazilian star Neymar is also unstoppable with seven goals and six dishes in nine Ligue 1 appearances, while Kylian Mbappe added four goals and three assists to his name in eight Ligue 1 matches thus far. The Parisians have so many weapons in the front with Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria waiting their chance off the bench. Dani Alves is another key player, and he made four dishes in nine Ligue 1 appearances.

The manager Unai Emery doesn’t have serious injury worries among the squad, and for the derby against Monaco, he will miss the experienced midfielder Thiago Motta due to a meniscus injury, while all other players are healthy and ready to go.

MONACO vs. PARIS SG – Match Prediction

Monaco will try to beat The Parisians for the first time this season, and they certainly possess the quality to damage Paris SG’s defense, so I believe we’ll see some goals on both sides here, as the visitors will surely find the net.

MY PICK: Over 3.5 goals (+110)
