Monday Night Raw Recap: Goldberg to Enter Royal Rumble

Last night was Survivor Series, in which Raw defeated SmackDown in most of the dual-brand matches. Now that they have the bragging rights, Raw looks forward to their next Pay-Per-View: Roadblock.

Opening Segment
The first episode of Raw after Survivor Series kicks off with the man who destroyed Brock Lesnar in 86 seconds last night, Goldberg. Since he was so impressive last night, Stephanie McMahon had asked him backstage if he had one more title run left in him. He believes he does, and will attempt to earn that opportunity by being the first confirmed entrant in the 2017 Royal Rumble match.

The New Day (c) vs. Sheamus & Cesaro – Raw Tag Team Championship
Since Sheamus and Cesaro were the sole surviving team for Raw last night, Mick Foley rewarded them with another shot at the Raw Tag Team Championships. The champions were surprisingly the first team eliminated for the red brand.

As usual, Xavier Woods distracts the referee so that Kofi Kingston isn’t seen tapping to Cesaro’s Sharpshooter. Kingston then rolls up Cesaro to retain the titles. Winners, and STILL Raw Tag Team Champions: The New Day

Cedric Alexander vs. Ariya Daivari
Before the match, Ariya Daivari gets some character (if you can call it that) by insulting the Canadian fans in attendance.

Daivari implemented a very physical offense in the match, but Cedric Alexander hit the Lumbar Check and that’s it. Winner: Cedric Alexander

Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel
Kevin Owens used The List of Jericho as a weapon last night, and it seemed like that would be the end of their friendship. However, Jericho and Owens fooled everyone and blamed Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins for Team Raw’s loss last night. Seth Rollins joins them in the ring and tries to attack both Jericho and Owens, and Roman Reigns helps out his former Shield partner.

After the brawl, Mick Foley makes a match for tonight. Kevin Owens will defend the Universal Championship against Seth Rollins in a No Disqualification match, but Chris Jericho and Roman Reigns will be banned from ringside.

Enzo Amore (w/Big Cass) vs. Rusev (w/Lana)
Enzo Amore was locked out of the men’s locker room, and ended up being in front of Lana naked. Rusev didn’t like this, so they have a match.

Rusev makes quick work of Muscles Marinara, locking in the Accolade and winning almost as fast as Goldberg did last night. Winner (via submission): Rusev

Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson vs. The Golden Truth – #1 Contender’s Match (Raw Tag Team Championships)
Since The New Day retained their tag titles earlier tonight against Sheamus and Cesaro, two more teams have a chance to dethrone them before they break Demolition’s 478 day record in 23 days. Whoever wins this match will get a championship match next week.

Gallows and Anderson hit a Magic Killer on Goldust and get yet another chance to lose to beat the New Day. Winners: Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson

Sami Zayn vs. Braun Strowman
As Sami Zayn makes his way to the ring, Braun Strowman attacks him from behind. While at a clear disadvantage, Sami Zayn still decides to have the match.

Strowman assaults Zayn way longer than he needs to, and Mick Foley comes out to tell the referee to end the match. Winner (via Mick Foley’s decision): Braun Strowman

In-ring Segment
Charlotte comes to the ring to gloat about attacking Bayley last night, but Sasha Banks interrupts to cash in her deserved rematch. Charlotte says that she’ll have the match next week, then Nia Jax joins them in the ring to insult Sasha Banks. Jax and Charlotte start attacking Banks, but then Bayley rushes the ring to even the odds.

Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Charlotte & Nia Jax (w/Dana Brooke)
In true Teddy Long fashion, Mick Foley turned that altercation into a tag team match.

Bayley and Sasha Banks work together to suplex Nia Jax, then Banks locks in the Bank Statement on Charlotte to force the Women’s Champion to tap out. Winners: Sasha Banks & Bayley

TJ Perkins vs. Rich Swann vs. Noam Dar – #1 Contender’s Match (Cruiserweight Championship)
Whoever wins this match will have a Cruiserweight Championship match against Brian Kendrick next Tuesday on the premiere episode of 205 Live. Rich Swann has pinned Brian Kendrick twice, so it seems like this match shouldn’t even be happening.

After breaking up TJ Perkins’ kneebar attempt on Noam Dar, Rich Swann hits the former Cruiserweight Champion with a kick to the head and wins the match. Winner: Rich Swann

Kevin Owens (c) vs. Seth Rollins – WWE Universal Championship (No Disqualification)
Since Seth Rollins was on Team Raw, he was awarded a championship opportunity. This makes no sense, because then Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, and Chris Jericho should also be getting Universal title shots. Either way, hopefully this is the last Owens/Rollins match we have so we can move on to something else.

Chris Jericho (wearing a Sin Cara mask) attacks Seth Rollins from the crowd, then Rollins hits Y2J with a Pedigree. Owens takes advantage to powerbomb Rollins on the apron and retain his title. Winner, and STILL WWE Universal Champion: Kevin Owens
