Money in the Bank Recap: Ellsworth Takes History

Tonight, SmackDown Live presents the most historic Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View in recent memory. Along with the usual ladder match, there is going to be a Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match as well. There are also three championship matches and a lot of tag team action.

The Colons vs. The Hype Bros (Mojo Rawley & Zack Ryder)
After being on the shelf for months with a leg injury, Zack Ryder has finally returned to in-ring action. When Ryder suffered his injury, he won a battle royal that put the Hype Bros in the #1 Contender’s spot for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Now that the Hype Bros are back together, Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley can work their way up the ladder.

It looks like the Hype Bros have not missed a single step, and they finish the Colons off with the Hype Ryder. Winners: The Hype Bros

Predicted Winners: N/A

Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Tamina vs. Carmella (w/James Ellsworth) – Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Here it is, the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Whichever woman climbs the ladder and grabs the briefcase will be guaranteed a SmackDown Women’s Championship match at any time they desire. No matter the result, this is a historic match.

Becky Lynch gets to the top of the ladder to grab the briefcase when James Ellsworth knocks her off of the ladder. Ellsworth tries to wake Carmella, but instead, he just climbs the ladder and grabs the briefcase for her. The referees argue about the decision, but it stays with Carmella. Winner, and FIRST-EVER Ms. Money in the Bank: Carmella

Predicted Winner: Carmella (1/1)

The Usos (c) vs. The New Day – SmackDown Tag Team Championships
When The New Day returned to SmackDown, they were handed a SmackDown Tag Team Championship opportunity against the Usos. The longest reigning Tag Team Champions of all-time have built some momentum over the past few weeks, but The Usos have been on top of the division for a long time.

The New Day keep getting the best of The Usos, and the champions realize they can’t do anymore. The Usos purposely getting themselves counted out, so even though they lost, they retain the titles. Winners (via count-out): The New Day

Predicted Winners: The Usos (1/2)

Naomi (c) vs. Lana – SmackDown Women’s Championship
This is Lana’s first singles match on the main roster and it is the biggest of her career. Lana cost Naomi a victory a couple weeks ago, and Naomi was frustrated enough to put her title on the line just so Shane McMahon could give her a match against Lana.

Surprisingly, Lana is in control for some of the match. Carmella comes down to ringside to cash in her briefcase, but she changes her mind to wait for a better time. This gives Naomi enough time to regroup, locking Lana in the Rings of Saturn to put her away and retain the title. Winner, and STILL SmackDown Women’s Champion (via submission): Naomi

Predicted Winner: Naomi (2/3)

Debut
Maria Kanellis and her husband Mike Kanellis (formerly known as Mike Bennett) debut tonight by declaring their love for each other. Maria calls herself the “First Lady of WWE” and now is the best possible time for her to return.

Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Randy Orton – WWE Championship
At Payback, Jinder Mahal made history by defeating Randy Orton to become the first-ever Indian WWE Champion. Tonight, Randy Orton has his guaranteed rematch in his hometown of St. Louis. Orton got the edge over Mahal last week by hitting him with an RKO “outta nowhere,” but he has failed to defeat Mahal in any capacity.

The Singh Brothers go to attack “Cowboy” Bob Orton at ringside when Randy Orton attacks them to protect his father. After RKO-ing both Singh Brothers outside the ring (one through a table), he heads back in the ring only to get laid out by Jinder Mahal. Winner, and STILL WWE Champion: Jinder Mahal

Predicted Winner: Jinder Mahal (3/4)

Breezango vs. The Ascension
For weeks, Breezango had been trying to figure out who destroyed their office and attacked Tyler Breeze. Breezango received an anonymous message on today’s episode of the Fashion Files to meet the attackers in the ring, and it turns out to be the Ascension.

Konnor and Viktor attempt a backbreaker double team, but Tyler Breeze knocks Konnor off of the turnbuckle. Fandango then rolls Viktor up for the surprise victory. Winners: Breezango

Predicted Winners: N/A

Baron Corbin vs. Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Shinsuke Nakamura – Money in the Bank Ladder Match
While tonight featured the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, the men’s version has been a staple in WWE since 2005. Last year, Dean Ambrose won the briefcase and cashed in on the same night. Whoever wins tonight will get a guaranteed WWE Championship match. While Shinsuke Nakamura makes his way down to the ring, Baron Corbin attacks him from behind and the match starts with only five Superstars.

Nakamura returns to the match when Corbin starts climbing the ladder and the King of Strong Style starts knocking out everybody. Nakamura and Styles are battling at the top of the ladder when Corbin knocks down the ladder. When everyone is laid out, Corbin climbs to the top of the ladder and grabs the briefcase. Winner: Baron Corbin

Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin (4/5)
