In January 2018, Milwaukee Bucks shooting guard Sterling Brown was arrested by city police over a parking violation. After that, Brown filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Milwaukee. Now, the city is hoping to settle the lawsuit as the Common Council voted to authorize a $400,000 settlement offer, but Brown and his attorney are not happy with it.
“I fully anticipate that any settlement that doesn’t include an admission that they violated Mr. Brown’s civil rights will go nowhere,” Brown’s attorney Mark Thomsen said. “We can’t heal in this city without that.”
Brown will have 14 days to accept or decline the settlement offer. His attorney told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the money alone is “not sufficient and undervalues the insult inflicted on Brown,” but the fact that the city is looking to hush up the problem without even admitting that police was wrong.

Police accused Brown of being combative and confrontational, and that he resisted the arrest so that they had to use force. Brown’s actions were hugely mischaracterized, which can be clearly seen on body camera footage. The footage was released almost four months after the arrest and definitively disproved the police’s version of the story.
