NCAA Tournament Selection for Men’s Lacrosse

For the fifth time in school history and the first time since 2016, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s lacrosse team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament and will play Wesleyan University in a second-round game at Christopher Newport University on Saturday. Newport News, Virginia’s game time is at 3pm.

The Engineers, who are 10-5 and rated No. 16 in Division III, and the Cardinals, who are 12-5 and No. 13, are two of ten at-large teams chosen for the 38-team field that selects the Division III national champion.

RPI, led by Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh, hosted Amherst College in 2016 and Middlebury College in 2010; both losses were in the second round. Rensselaer traveled to Washington College (Maryland) in 2000 and lost 15-6, then progressed to the semifinals in 2001 by defeating SUNY Cortland 9-7 before losing at Nazareth College 15-14.

Before there were postseason tournaments or NCAA divisions, RPI won the 1952 NCAA Championship. This year’s club averages 13.20 goals per game while surrendering 11.06. Connor Glosner (Auburn, NH / Derryfield), Cooper Urban (Glen Mills, PA / Salesianum School), and Trey Froehlich (Austin, TX / Regents School of Austin) are seniors who spearhead the onslaught.

Midfielder Glosner leads the squad in goals, points, and ground balls with 30 and 27, respectively. He has scored two man-up goals and induced four turnovers. Urban, an attacker, leads the team in assists with 17 and points with 35, while Froehlich, who also plays the position, has 23 goals and 31 points. Three of his goals have been scored by man-ups.
