New York/New Jersey leads the list of North American metropolitan areas with 60 professional championships, followed by Boston (40), Los Angeles (37), Chicago (31), Detroit (25) and Montreal (25), according to the totals provided.
Boston is often called ‘Titletown’ in part because of its long run of championships. The Boston Celtics reinforced that reputation when they beat the Dallas Mavericks for a record 18th NBA title in 2024.
Los Angeles has closed ground in recent years. The Dodgers and the LA Galaxy captured major trophies before the Dodgers added a ninth World Series in 2025, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays. The Los Angeles total includes 12 championships credited to the Lakers, five of which were won when the franchise was based in Minneapolis prior to the 1960-61 season.
New York/New Jersey’s recent haul includes the 2026 New York Knicks NBA title — the franchise’s third — and other championships across leagues: the 2024 New York Liberty (WNBA), 2021 New York City FC (MLS), the 2011 New York Giants (NFL), the 2009 New York Yankees (MLB) and the 2003 New Jersey Devils (NHL).
Other metropolitan-area recent champions listed include Boston’s 2024 Celtics, 2018 Red Sox and 2018 New England Patriots; Los Angeles’ 2025 Dodgers, 2024 LA Galaxy and 2021 Rams; Chicago’s 2021 Sky and 2016 Cubs; Detroit’s 2008 Red Wings and 2004 Pistons; and Montreal’s 1993 Canadiens.
