Newcastle have confirmed that 20-year-old Lewis Miley fractured his fibula in a training session and will miss the club’s remaining three games this season after undergoing surgery, per the report.
Manager Eddie Howe described the incident as an innocuous moment in training, saying there was no other player involved. Howe said Miley slipped and went down, and what staff initially suspected might be a minor twist soon proved to be more serious, underscoring the fragile nature of a professional footballer’s career.
Miley’s season-ending injury comes after a recent return to the squad. The midfielder had been sidelined since January with a leg problem sustained in Newcastle’s Champions League draw against Paris Saint-Germain, and he only rejoined the line-up last month, making four successive starts beginning with the Crystal Palace match.
Howe said the surgery went well and that Miley now faces a few months out, with the club hoping he will be available around the start of pre-season. The manager stressed caution on timetables, saying the immediate priority is for Miley to recover and focus on the injury rather than being given specific return dates that could prove counterproductive.
The setback drew praise from Howe for Miley’s recent form, with the manager calling the absence a real blow to both the player and the team while expressing confidence in Miley’s character to return stronger. Newcastle ended a four-game league losing run with a win over Brighton to move to 13th in the table and have three fixtures remaining this season, beginning with a trip to Nottingham Forest followed by matches against West Ham and Fulham.
Howe also provided an update on full-back Tino Livramento, saying the youngster is improving, back running and on the grass, but that it is unlikely he will feature again this season. The manager suggested it would be unwise to rush Livramento back for the final match and instead to allow him to recover and have a productive summer.
