In Florida, third-grade teacher Mary Crippen has found an innovative way to engage students in the classroom by incorporating football into everyday lessons. Her program, called NFeLementary, is a specialized curriculum that teaches core subjects through the lens of professional football. The initiative builds on a foundation laid decades ago by her mother, who originally created a football-based educational model to connect with young learners.

Crippen, recognizing the growing influence and popularity of football among youth, decided to expand the original concept into a full classroom experience. NFeLementary includes lesson plans across multiple subjects such as math, reading, and social studies, each presented with a football theme. For example, students might learn multiplication by calculating player statistics, or improve reading comprehension through stories involving NFL athletes and historical moments in the sport.

The program has gained attention for its ability to capture student interest, particularly among those who may not thrive in traditional learning environments. Crippen utilizes the structure and strategy of football to foster critical thinking, teamwork, and discipline in her students. The classroom environment is designed to resemble an NFL team dynamic, with students taking on various roles and responsibilities akin to team positions, encouraging a collaborative learning experience.

NFeLementary’s impact has extended beyond Crippen’s classroom. The curriculum has been shared with other educators, and it is gaining traction as a creative tool for instruction. NFL players and teams have also taken notice. Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, for instance, has participated in related events, including local book fairs, to support literacy efforts aligned with the program.

Crippen’s approach demonstrates how sports can be used effectively to enhance education. By channeling students’ enthusiasm for football into academic success, NFeLementary exemplifies how creative teaching methods can make a lasting impact in elementary education.
