NFL Fantasy: Biggest Fantasy Busts From Week 1

NFL Fantasy

Week 1 of the NFL season is just about over, but now is the time to look at the players that hurt your fantasy team in week one. Some of the best fantasy players coming into the season did not live up to the hype in week one. In fact, a few of the best fantasy players had career lows and failed to do anything to help your fantasy team. Here are the biggest fantasy busts from Week 1 of the NFL regular season.

Quarterback Russell Wilson – Seattle Seahawks

158 Passing Yards, 40 Rushing Yards, 1 Fumble Lost, 0 TDs

Coming into week one, Russell Wilson had never had much success in Green Bay. The trend continued on the weekend, as the Packers defense stifled the Seahawks and shut down Wilson. The 40 yards rushing was a positive sign after last year when Wilson only once topped 40 yards rushing, but overall this was one of the worst fantasy games for the quarterback in his career. Wilson has a nice matchup next week at home versus San Francisco, so he should rebound and be a top-12 QB in week two.

Running Back Le’Veon Bell – Pittsburgh Steelers

32 Rushing Yards, 3 Receptions, 15 Receiving Yards, 0 TDs

Holding out over the preseason hurt Le’Veon Bell in week one. The highly coveted back failed to crack 50 total yards of offense for the first time in a regular season game. Last season versus the Browns, Bell had 201 yards in a touchdown in just one game. It will be interesting to see how the Steelers use Bell in the next few weeks, but he could once again be a disappointment next weekend against a stout Minnesota Vikings defense.

Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall – New York Giants

1 Reception, 10 Receiving Yards, 0 TDs

As one of the biggest offseason signings, Brandon Marshall was expected to be a productive receiver for the New York Giants. His week one performance left a lot to be desired, as the veteran receiver had his lowest yardage total since week three of 2014. When Odell Beckham returns to the lineup, things could open up for Marshall, but until then expectations for Marshall should be hampered.

Tight End Tyler Eifert – Cincinnati Bengals

1 Reception, 4 Receiving Yards, 0 TDs

Nothing went right for the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 as they were the only team to be shutout entering Monday. While the play of Andy Dalton was horrendous on Sunday, Tyler Eifert did not do much better, catching a single pass for four yards. The Bengals play on Thursday night this week and will likely rely on the running game to carry the offense against Houston. Expect another slow performance by Eifert. Deemed to be a stellar tight end with the Bengals short on receiving options (outside of A.J. Green), Eifert was a big disappointment.

Defense – Houston Texans

23 Points Allowed, 280 Yards Allowed, 0 Sacks, 0 Turnovers,

The Houston Texans defense did not necessarily have the worst week of any team in Week 1, but they did, however, fail to register any meaningful stat. Blake Bortles was sacked 34 times last season and tossed 16 interceptions, yet in Week 1, the Texans could not get their hands on the ball or the quarterback. The Texans have a short week, playing the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night, but should have a better performance in Week 2.

Kicker Adam Vinatieri – Indianapolis Colts

1 FG Made 20-29, 1 Missed PAT, 1 Missed FG 30-39

Adam Vinatieri had what many deemed to be a pretty good matchup in Week 1. Yes, the Colts were without Andrew Luck but they were still facing a Los Angeles Rams team with a so-so defense. And that defense was missing star Aaron Donald. You’d think that Vinatieri would do a lot more than one field goal make.

After making all 44 of his extra points attempts last season, Vinatieri missed on his only attempt in Week 1. He missed another field goal earlier in the game, finishing Week 1 with just three points. As long as Luck is out, the Colts offense is not likely to do much, making Vinatieri, who was the fifth highest scoring kicker in the AFC last season, a terrible NFL fantasy option. Best to drop him and grab someone else for Week 2.
