With NFL free agency approaching, front offices around the league are preparing for an offseason that could significantly reshape depth charts at wide receiver and running back. While official signings cannot be completed until the new league year begins, teams are evaluating their own pending free agents, identifying potential upgrades and weighing the cost of adding skill-position talent in a tight salary-cap environment.

At wide receiver, several clubs are expected to prioritize adding explosive playmakers who can stretch the field and create separation on the perimeter. Offenses that struggled to generate big plays in the passing game last season are examining options ranging from established veterans to younger receivers who may be looking for expanded roles. Contract structure will be a key storyline, as teams balance the desire for top-end speed and production with the financial flexibility needed to address multiple roster spots.

Some organizations with emerging young quarterbacks could target experienced receivers who bring route-running precision and reliability on critical downs. Others might lean toward receivers with versatility to line up both outside and in the slot, giving playcallers more freedom in formation and motion usage. The overall market will likely be influenced by how early signings define the going rate for starters versus rotational receivers and specialists.

At running back, teams are monitoring a group of players that often face a different calculus in negotiations. The position continues to be one where durability, pass protection and receiving ability are heavily scrutinized. Front offices are considering whether to invest in a feature back, lean into a committee approach or augment existing backfields with situational players who excel on third down or in short-yardage situations.

Coaches and general managers are also assessing scheme fit. Zone-heavy rushing attacks may value backs with vision and cutback ability, while gap-oriented systems could look for runners with power and decisiveness between the tackles. The ability to contribute in the passing game, both as a receiver and in blitz pickup, remains a major factor in determining a back’s value.

Across the league, some teams are expected to be more aggressive than others, driven by cap space, roster age and internal expectations. Contenders might target proven veterans who can make an immediate impact, while rebuilding teams could focus on younger players with upside who can grow with the core of the roster.

As discussions progress, the landscape at wide receiver and running back will come into clearer focus. The early stages of free agency typically set the tone, establishing benchmarks for contracts and helping define which teams are pushing hardest to upgrade their offensive skill positions before attention eventually turns to the draft.
