NFL News: Emmanuel Sanders Had Offseason Surgery and More

Steelers Browns Eagles

Emmanuel Sanders hasn’t practiced or played this preseason and now we know why. The Denver Broncos wideout underwent offseason surgery on his ankle. He did participate in workouts Monday.

“My (right) ankle gave me problems all last year, Sanders told Denver’s 9 News. “I came to camp last year thinking, ‘How in the hell am I going to get through this season?'”

Sanders, of course, didn’t make it through last season, tearing his Achilles in the 12th game. He blames his ankle issues for the tear.

“I feel like that was kind of the reason I tore my Achilles,” he said.

In his 12 starts, Sanders caught 71 passes for 868 yards and four touchdowns. He originally injured the ankle in 2017 and missed four games that season. The procedure Sanders underwent is called “Tightrope” surgery to stabilize the cranial cruciate ligament.

If you’ve heard of it before, it’s because Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had it done before the National Championship game.

Sanders is expected to suit up for some snaps this preseason.

INJURIES

Speaking of Achilles tears, the New York Giants lost another wide receiver Monday when Ama Etta-Tawo went down with the ailment. He’ll miss the rest of the year.

The Giants already lost Corey Coleman for the season with a torn ACL and Sterling Shepard broke his thumb.

  • James Folston Jr. was signed by the Tennessee Titans. To make room for the linebacker, they waived linebacker Jordan Williams with an injury designation.
