Northwestern defeats Nebraska to begin the college football season

The start of the collegiate football season included 14 games on Saturday, ranging from an FBS Big Ten opening in Ireland to an FCS SWAC vs. MEAC duel in Atlanta. Only 17:22 of the game saw Northwestern in the lead, and despite twice falling behind by 11 points, the Wildcats still defeated Nebraska and coach Scott Frost by a score of 31-28.

Under Frost, Nebraska is 5-21 in games decided by one possession. They have now dropped three straight season openers. Last year, Nebraska lost by a single digit in each of its nine games. With 1:27 left, linebacker for the Wildcats Zander Mueller intercepted Huskers quarterback Casey Thompson to secure the victory. In the fourth quarter, it was Thompson’s second interception.

A 6-yard touchdown throw from Ryan Hilinski to Donny Navarro gave Northwestern the lead with 25 seconds left in the first half after the Cornhuskers had taken an early 14-3 lead. However, Nebraska stepped up in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back running touchdowns to gain a 28-17 edge. During the previous season, Northwestern never managed to outscore a Big Ten team by more than 21 points.
