NXT Recap: The UK Stars Are Back

Photo from WWE.com

NXT does this weird thing every few months where they wait two weeks before returning to Full Sail University to continue their television tapings. Although the episode right after TakeOver airs four days after the huge event, it is actually taped in the TakeOver arena before the main show starts. There are a lot of replay videos, interviews, and a few matches that don’t feature anyone on the TakeOver card, but they are still interesting. This go-around features building the women’s division and the return of Pete Dunne as he teams up with Wolfgang to face Trent Seven and Tyler Bate.

No Way Jose vs… Nobody
To pump up the crowd, the show kicks off with No Way Jose. As Jose dances his way to the ring, he is attacked from behind by Lars Sullivan, who has a reputation of having a bit of a temper. Sullivan, who normally attacks tag team partners who lose the match for him, seemingly attacks Jose for no reason whatsoever. Sullivan starts the assault outside the ring before planting Jose in the middle of the ring with a modified spinebuster.

Interview w/Johnny Gargano
At TakeOver: Brooklyn III, Johnny Gargano had one of the best matches of the weekend against Andrade “Cien” Almas. Gargano seemed to be getting a win at the end of a hard-fought bout until Salina Vega threw a #DIY shirt at him. It seemed like the memories of his former friend, Tommaso Ciampa, distracted him from focusing on Almas and Mr. “Tranquilo” himself took advantage to win the match.

In a backstage interview, Gargano does not blame Salina Vega for getting a cheap victory for her client, but instead, he blames himself and decides that he needs to get better. While he is trying to cover it up, it is still clear that Ciampa betraying him is still affecting him.

Interview w/Wolfgang & Pete Dunne
Pete Dunne recalls his United Kingdom Championship victory over Tyler Bate at NXT TakeOver: Chicago and claims that it was the true beginning of the UK brand. Dunne believes that his title defenses make the UK Brand stronger, but he is interrupted by his tag team partner for later on tonight. Wolfgang has been waiting since the original WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament for his opportunity at the championship, and he wants Dunne to give him a shot. Dunne scoffs and instructs Wolfgang to focus on their match tonight.

Peyton Royce (w/Billie Kay) vs. Sarah Logan
While TakeOver: Brooklyn III featured the best women that NXT had to offer, this match features two women that could define the future of the brand. Peyton Royce and Billie Kay have been featured regularly on NXT over the past year, feuding with practically everyone on the roster. Sarah Logan is still trying to find her footing in NXT, but she has shown how talented she is during her appearance in the Mae Young Classic when she tore the house down against Mia Yim.

After Royce kicks out of a roll up, she gets enough space to hit Logan with a knee. This sets Logan up for a fisherman suplex, giving one-half of the Iconic Duo a victory. Winner: Peyton Royce

Interview w/Bobby Roode
There are a lot of interviews on these post-TakeOver shows, folks. Bobby Roode debuted on SmackDown Live last week but he still has unfinished business in NXT. Roode is determined to “embarrass” Roderick Strong before pursuing his NXT Championship rematch against the man that took it from him a couple weeks ago, Drew McIntyre.

Mustache Mountain (Trent Seven & Tyler Bate) vs. Wolfgang & Pete Dunne
With how successful the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament was, it is surprising that WWE barely showcases that talent. Some of it is probably due to deals with Progress Wrestling and other UK-based promotions, but it is strange that this is such a rare sight after Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate had the Match of the Year so far (according to WWE.com, mind you) at NXT TakeOver: Chicago.

While Bate and Dunne duke it out, Wolfgang tags himself in. Bate doesn’t realize and attempts the Tyler Driver ’97 on Dunne, but Wolfgang immediately breaks up the void pinfall with a Swanton Bomb. This only furthers Wolfgang’s pursuit towards the UK Championship. Winners: Wolfgang & Pete Dunne
