NXT TakeOver War Games Recap

To kick off Survivor Series weekend, NXT hosts TakeOver: War Games, the developmental brand’s first big event since TakeOver: Brooklyn III. Highlights of tonight’s show include Aleister Black vs. Velveteen Dream, a Fatal Four-Way for the vacated NXT Women’s Championship, and the return of War Games.

Kassius Ohno vs. Lars Sullivan
Lars Sullivan has arguably been the most dominant Superstar on NXT over the past few months, destroying his own tag team partners and all of his opponents. Kassius Ohno knows how impressive a win over Sullivan would be, so he requested this match last week. Ohno hopes that a win here can get him back into the NXT Championship picture. Of course, he actually has to win.

Ohno hits Sullivan with every hard strike in his playbook, but Sullivan refuses to stay down. Sullivan counters a discus elbow into a driving side slam, getting the first big win of his career. Winner: Lars Sullivan

Predicted Winner: Kassius Ohno (0/1)

Aleister Black vs. Velveteen Dream
These two Superstars could not be further opposites. Velveteen Dream is an over-the-top flamboyant competitor looking to make a name for himself. Black is reserved, calm, and known to keep to himself. Their story got more aggressive as it developed with the sole objective being for Aleister Black to say Velveteen Dream’s name.

This is as back and forth as a match can get, but Aleister Black is just better enough to land the Black Mass spinning back kick and to continue his winning streak. After the match, Black grabs a microphone to simply say, “Enjoy infamy, Velveteen Dream.” Black won the fight, but Dream’s goal was achieved by getting Black to “say his name.” Winner: Aleister Black

Predicted Winner: Aleister Black (1/2)

Kairi Sane vs. Ember Moon vs. Peyton Royce vs. Nikki Cross – NXT Women’s Championship
A couple months ago, Asuka vacated the NXT Women’s Championship after holding it for 523 consecutive days. The Empress of Tomorrow is now a member of the Raw roster and will be competing tomorrow night at Survivor Series. Now, three of NXT’s top female Superstars compete to be the first new NXT Women’s Champion in over a year and a half.

With Kairi Sane out at ringside, Ember Moon hits both Peyton Royce and Nikki Cross with the Eclipse at the same time. Moon then pins Cross and on her third attempt, she became the champion. Winner, and NEW NXT Women’s Champion: Ember Moon

Predicted Winner: Kairi Sane (1/3)

Announcement
The next TakeOver event will take place one night before the Royal Rumble in January and it will hail from the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia.

Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/Zelina Vega) – NXT Championship
At NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III, Drew McIntyre ushered in a new era by defeating Bobby Roode to become the new NXT Champion. Since then, he has successfully defended against Roode and Roderick Strong. Andrade “Cien” Almas wanted to be the next challenger, but McIntyre wouldn’t accept until Almas showed up to confront the champion mano a mano. With the challenge accepted, a reinvigorated Almas looks to capture WWE gold for the first time ever.

Zelina Vega assists El Idolo at every opportunity, but Andrade “Cien” Almas dodges the running big boot known as the Claymore to gain the true advantage. While McIntyre is caught up on the top rope (and possibly injuring himself in the process), Almas hits a spiking Hammerlock DDT to score the surprise victory and to become only the 12th man to hold the NXT Championship. Winner, and NEW NXT Champion: Andrade “Cien” Almas

Predicted Winner: Drew McIntyre (1/4)

The Undisputed Era vs. The Authors of Pain & Roderick Strong vs. SAnitY – War Games
Over the past few months, these three teams have been involved in a chaotic feud that William Regal believes can only be solved in the War Games match. Here is how the War Games match will play out:

  • One member of each team will start the match in a standard Triple Threat Match.
  • Every few minutes, the remaining two members of a random team will join the fray.
  • A fall will not count until all nine men are in the match.
  • If anyone escapes the cage, they will forfeit the match for their team.

Starting the match is Eric Young of SAnitY, Adam Cole or The Undisputed Era, and Roderick Strong, who is an honorary member of the Authors of Pain tonight.

After dozens of minutes featuring nothing but chaos, Cole hits Young with a chair-assisted Shining Wizard to end the violence and to pick up a huge win for his team. Winners: The Undisputed Era

Predicted Winners: The Undisputed Era (2/5)
