The Baltimore Orioles officially introduced first baseman Pete Alonso on Friday at Camden Yards following the completion of a five-year, $155 million contract. The deal represents a significant shift in the Orioles’ approach to player acquisitions, marking the largest commitment the organization has made in recent years.

Alonso, who had spent the entirety of his Major League career with the New York Mets prior to this signing, brings a well-established power presence to Baltimore’s lineup. A multiple-time All-Star and 2019 National League Rookie of the Year, Alonso has been one of the league’s most consistent home run hitters since debuting in 2019. His addition is expected to bolster the middle of the Orioles’ batting order as the team looks to build on recent improvements.

In recent seasons, Baltimore has largely focused on short-term contracts and internal development, relying on a deep pool of emerging talent. The signing of Alonso signals a more aggressive strategy aimed at competing immediately and sustaining long-term success.

Orioles front office officials noted during the introduction that Alonso’s leadership qualities, durability, and offensive production were key factors in their decision. Over his career, Alonso has averaged more than 35 home runs per season, including league-leading totals in both 2019 and 2022. His defensive skills at first base and presence in the clubhouse are also seen as assets to support Baltimore’s young core.

Alonso expressed excitement to join the Orioles and be part of an organization aiming for postseason success. “I’m thrilled to be here in Baltimore,” he said. “This is a team with a lot of heart and talent. I hope to contribute however I can to take this group to the next level.”

Team leadership acknowledged that the signing is a notable departure from prior off-seasons. General Manager Mike Elias highlighted the importance of complementing the team’s homegrown players with experienced talent. “Adding someone like Pete stabilizes and elevates our lineup,” Elias said. “This is about taking that next step.”

The Orioles will look to integrate Alonso into a roster that already features several promising players under the age of 30, aiming to remain competitive in a strong American League East division.
