Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou offered public backing for Morocco ahead of their opening FIFA World Cup match against Brazil on Saturday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, scheduled for 3 p.m. local time. Ouaddou is a former Morocco defender who won 58 caps for his country between 2000 and 2009 and guided Orlando Pirates to the South African Premiership title.
In an Instagram message, Ouaddou extended encouragement to the national team and its technical, medical and administrative staff, along with all those involved in promoting Moroccan football internationally. The coach praised the work of those contributing to the sport’s development and recognition.
Ouaddou highlighted Morocco’s historic run at the 2022 World Cup under Oualid Regragui, saying that achievement will remain in the country’s memories and showcased the Atlas Lions’ talent and fighting spirit. Morocco reached the semifinals in Qatar, where they were defeated 2-0 by France.
The former Fulham defender added that a new chapter begins with the current tournament and expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to meet the challenge with commitment and pride. He wished the players and staff success and said he stands with them alongside more than 40 million Moroccans.
Morocco, ranked seventh in the FIFA rankings, face Scotland on June 19 and Haiti on June 24 following the match with Brazil.
