Pardew says Arsenal’s time-wasting would overshadow potential league title

Alan Pardew has said that, in his view, any Premier League title Arsenal might win this season would be clouded by questions over their game management and perceived time-wasting tactics.

Speaking about the title race with Manchester City, Pardew argued that the way a team conducts itself over the course of a season matters as much as the final position in the table. He suggested that Arsenal’s approach in closing out matches, particularly their use of delays and slowing the tempo, would leave some observers feeling that their success was not entirely straightforward.

Pardew’s comments focus on the broader debate around time management in modern football, where teams often use substitutions, extended pauses over set pieces and careful control of restarts to protect a lead. Critics see this as unsporting and contrary to the spirit of the game, while others view it as a legitimate part of elite competition and tactical discipline.

In recent seasons, discussions about time-wasting have intensified across the Premier League, prompting referees and league officials to look at ways to keep the ball in play longer and reduce deliberate delays. This has included stricter enforcement of restart times and additional stoppage time added at the end of each half.

Pardew placed Arsenal within that wider context, arguing that their title challenge has been marked by a particularly strong emphasis on running down the clock when in front. From his perspective, this would mean that, should they finish above Manchester City and lift the trophy, some fans and pundits would attach an informal ‘asterisk’ to their achievement, interpreting it as a triumph shaped significantly by negative tactics.

He did not call for any official action against Arsenal’s results or league standing, instead framing his remarks as a judgment on how the season might be remembered. Pardew indicated that, while a title would still count in the record books like any other, the manner in which it was secured would fuel ongoing arguments about style, sportsmanship and the evolution of game management in the English top flight.

The comments are likely to add another layer to discussion among supporters and analysts as the run-in continues, with Arsenal and Manchester City again contesting the top places in the Premier League table. They also reflect a long-standing tension in football between winning at all costs and playing in a way that satisfies expectations of fairness and entertainment.
