Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed disappointment with the way referees have officiated incidents involving his striker Erling Haaland. The manager believes that the Norwegian forward is frequently penalized too harshly in physical contests with defenders, impacting both his performance and the team’s offensive rhythm.
Guardiola spoke out following a series of recent matches in which Haaland was involved in multiple physical challenges. According to Guardiola, referees have been quicker to blow the whistle on Haaland compared to defenders, who he claims are allowed more leniency in similar situations.
“It seems like Erling is being punished just for being strong,” Guardiola said. “We’re not asking for special treatment, only fair decisions on the pitch. He goes up for challenges, uses his body like any forward, but consistently, the fouls are called against him rather than the defenders.”
The comments come at a time when Manchester City are competing in a tight title race. Haaland, known for his physical style and clinical finishing, has been a key part of City’s attacking line-up since joining the club. Guardiola emphasized that the striker’s physical presence is a legitimate part of his game and should be officiated accordingly.
“It’s part of football to use your strength, and it’s something Erling does well,” Guardiola added. “But the rules must be applied consistently across all players, regardless of their size or style.”
While Guardiola did not cite specific refereeing decisions or matches, he made clear that he believes there is a pattern in how Haaland is judged. The manager indicated that he has spoken to officials in the past and hopes that the issue will be reviewed.
Manchester City will continue their campaign as the Premier League season progresses, with Haaland remaining a central figure in their pursuit of silverware. It remains to be seen whether Guardiola’s comments will influence refereeing approaches in upcoming fixtures.
