The PGA of America announced Saturday that the purse for the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club will be $20.5 million, with $3.69 million going to the winner, the report says. That increase puts the PGA Championship alongside the Masters and the U.S. Open in the $20 million-plus purse club, per the report.
Last year, the PGA Championship carried a $19 million purse and ranked third among the four majors, the report says. The U.S. Open awarded $21.5 million and the Masters paid $21 million, while The Open Championship’s purse was $17 million, the report adds.
Augusta National raised its purse to $22.5 million in April, and Rory McIlroy collected $4.5 million and a green jacket after winning the Masters for a second straight year, the report says. The Players Championship purse is $25 million, and until this year the PGA Championship’s purse had been smaller than those of the PGA Tour’s signature events, per the report.
The report quotes new PGA of America CEO Terry Clark saying the organization is focused on improving its championships and that purse levels are one of the factors considered. “We’re really focused on all aspects of how do we improve and continue to look at improvement at the assets we have, including PGA Championships,” Clark said earlier this week, the report says.
The report also notes payout details from previous events and projections: Scottie Scheffler received $3.42 million for winning his first PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, second place will earn about $2.2 million, third place about $1.4 million, and each of the top 20 finishers will receive at least $252,000. The last-place finisher among the 82 players who made the 36-hole cut will be paid $23,900, while golfers who missed the cut will receive $4,300, per the report.
The announced purse applies to the upcoming 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, the report says.
